UIS to host foreign and independent film series

The Division of Student Affairs at the UIS is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on Friday nights this fall. All films are shown at 7 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium, located on level one of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Remaining films include: Oct. 1 – Rivers and Tides, Oct. 8 – The Magdalene Sisters, Oct.15 – Spirited Away, Oct. 22 – The Fog of War, Oct. 29 – Monster, Nov. 5  -The House of Yes, Nov. 12 – Pieces of April. Bake Sale - Volunteers needed October 6 & 7

Yes, it’s time once again to put on your apron, grab your favorite recipe, and help us raise $$ for the Staff Scholarship Fund.  Last year’s bake sale raised $770 so let’s see if we can’t do even better this year!!  In addition to asking for donations to stock the upcoming bake sale, we need to ask for volunteers to staff the sale. Volunteers will work 1-hour shifts (unless you are able to work longer) from 7:30am - 2:00pm on Wednesday and 8:00am - 2:00pm on Thursday. We would like to have 3 people staffing the sale during each shift. If you are able to help out, please contact Donna Johnson at 206-6344 or djohn1@uis.edu

UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Aids of Language”

Aids of Language: Paintings by Thom Whalen” will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the UIS from October 6 through 28.  The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Thursday, October 7, beginning with a talk at 5:30 p.m. followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.  The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public. The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Register to vote NOW before the Oct. 5th deadline.  You can register to vote or change your registration address in the Women's Center, Student Affairs Building, Room 35.  The Women's Issues Caucus (WIC) student organization is giving away free T-shirts to students who register in the Women's Center and free tickets to one of three upcoming events courtesy of the Sangamon Auditorium: Capitol Steps, Ten Tenors or Invisible Man.  Please call  Kathy or Lynn at 206-7173 to make an appointment to register and to find out what identification materials you need to bring.

Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series at UIS features Pulitzer Prize-winning author

Mark E. Neely, Jr., Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will deliver the first lecture in the Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series on Thursday, October 7, at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  The theme of this year’s Series, on October 7, 14, and 21, is “Ethics and Power.” Neely’s talk, “Civil Liberties in Lincoln’s Presidency,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. His lecture is free and open to the public. No reservations are required and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mark W. Summers, professor of History at the University of Kentucky, will discuss “The Politics of Patronage in Lincoln’s Era” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 14, in Brookens Auditorium. The series will conclude on October 21 with “Lincoln’s Presidential Virtues,” presented by William L. Miller, Scholar in Ethics and Institutions at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. His talk will also be held at 7:30 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium For more information, contact the Center at 217/206-6576.

UIS, AFSCME Local 805 reach agreement on salary increase

The University of Illinois at Springfield and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, Local 805, have reached agreement on a salary increase of 3.1% for all bargaining unit members. The agreement is part of a wage reopener in the second year of a three-year contract.  The increase was effective on August 29, 2004 The agreement covers seven grounds workers, two maintenance repair workers, an assistant grounds gardener, and a grounds equipment mechanic, all of whom work in the Department of Physical Planning and Operations.

The university is bargaining with four other unions this fall: The Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 55; IATSE, Local 138 (stagehands); operating engineers, Local 399; and University Professionals of Illinois, Local 4100.
