Taste of UIS lunchtime lecture to
discuss American higher education
The
University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present
“Progress Lost? American Higher Education,” the first program in
this fall’s Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime
Lecture Series, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, September
23, at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 South Sixth St., Springfield.
Reservations are required and should be made no later than
Friday, September 17. The second program in the series will be
Thursday, October 21, when UIS faculty members Michael Lemke and
Keith Miller will present “Floodplain of Dreams,” an overview of
the impending restoration of 7,000 acres of the Emiquon
floodplain. Cost for each program -- $18 per person, $13 for
Alumni Association members and their guests – includes a hot

Health
Benefit of Wine Presentation
On Sunday,
September 26, the
University of Illinois Alumni Association invites you to a
fascinating presentation on the UIS campus by U of I medical
school associate professor, Dr. Abraham Kocheril, on the health
benefits of wine. At 4:30 pm in the PAC Studio Theatre, Dr.
Kocheril will make a fact-filled and entertaining presentation
in which he will discuss his research and answer many questions
you may have about wine. He will address its health benefits, as
well as the etiquette surrounding it. This will be followed by a
lavish hors d’oeuvres reception that will include wine tasting
of 6 varieties of good, affordable domestic and imported wine.
An added benefit will be the preview of the UIAA Explorers
Alumni tours for 2005 during the reception. The cost is $25 a
person, or $15 each for alumni association members and their

Program
at UIS will examine “trendy drugs”
UIS will present “Trendy Drugs of
Abuse” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, in Brookens
Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on
the UIS campus. The program is free and open to the public.
Featured speaker will be Trinka Porrata, drug consultant and
retired narcotics detective with the Los Angeles Police
Department. Campus sponsors are the UIS Counseling Center,
Substance Abuse Task Force, Health Service, Housing Office, and
Police Department.
This program is presented in
conjunction with Project X, an initiative of Illinois Governor
Rod Blagojevich designed to promote community awareness, early
intervention, and education about Ecstasy, Methamphetamine, and
other club drugs. The Wells Center in Jacksonville is one of
nine sites chosen for Project X efforts in the state. Partial
funding is provided by the Illinois Department of Human
Services/Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. Porrata
will also lead a session from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 12
at UIS. This program is designed for school and mental health
counselors, law enforcement personnel.
Lincoln
Legacy Lecture Series
“Ethics and Power” is the theme
of this year’s Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series to be held at the
University of Illinois at Springfield on Thursday, October 7,
14, and 21. Each lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Brookens
Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on
the UIS campus. The lectures are free and open to the public.
No reservations are required and seating will be on a
first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact
