In the Studio Theatre of the Public Affairs Center (PAC), just
below Sangamon Auditorium on level 1, on the UIS Campus. Actors
should plan to arrive on either audition night at 7pm, dressed
comfortably, and ready to move and read (cold readings) from the
script. Picture/Resumes are appreciated, but not mandatory.
Prepared 1 minute modern monologues are also appreciated, but
not mandatory. Actors should be prepared to have fun. For

MTV’s Hit
Series “THE REAL WORLD” Looking for Newest Roommates
On September 18, 2004
from 10AM to 5PM, Casting Directors from Bunim/Murray
Productions, producers of the perennial hit MTV show “The Real
World” will be holding an open casting call at White Star,
225 West Ontario St., Chicago, IL 60610. Applicants are
asked to bring a recent picture of themselves (which will not be
returned) and photo ID. Everyone between the ages of 18 – 24 is
encouraged to bring a recent photo and identification to the
open casting call at White Star on September 18, 2004
from 10AM to 5PM. Seven lucky people will get the
opportunity of a lifetime when MTV hands over the keys to a new
fantasy pad this year for the show’s 16th season.
The Real World, MTV’s longest running show, is a
documentary series about seven strangers who spend five months
living and working together. Fans recently started following
the stories of the cast of “The Real World: Philadelphia.”
Author of guide to Photoshop
will sign copies of book
Sherry
Hutson, author of Web Wizard’s Guide to Photoshop, will
sign copies of her book from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, September
16, near the bookstore on the lower level of the Public Affairs
Center
Hutson is UIS webmaster and an
adjunct faculty member in the Communication and Visual Arts
programs. Her book, published by Addison-Wesley, teaches
beginning web designers how to use the software application
Photoshop, widely recognized as the premiere image editing
program for print and the web, and its companion program
ImageReady. Copies of the book will be available in the
bookstore.

Hanson
Professional Services Inc. Faculty Scholar established at UIS
Hanson
Professional Services Inc. is teaming with the University of
Illinois at Springfield to broaden opportunities for faculty and
students in programs in the university’s College of Business and
Management through the Hanson Professional Services Faculty
Scholar gift. The $60,000 gift will allow the college to better
support a professor who will be engaged in teaching, research,
and outreach in management information systems, marketing, or
organizational management. Hanson Professional Services Inc.,
headquartered in Springfield, has 15 offices throughout the
nation and provides consulting services worldwide.
Taste of UIS lunchtime lecture to
discuss American higher education
The University of Illinois Alumni
Association at UIS will present “Progress Lost? American Higher
Education,” the first program in this fall’s Taste of UIS:
Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series, from
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, September 23, at Maldaner’s
Upstairs, 222 South Sixth St., Springfield. Reservations are
required and should be made no later than Friday, September 17.
The second program in the series will be Thursday, October 21,
when UIS faculty members Michael Lemke and Keith Miller will
present “Floodplain of Dreams,” an overview of the impending
restoration of 7,000 acres of the Emiquon floodplain. Cost for
each program -- $18 per person, $13 for Alumni Association
members and their guests – includes a hot buffet lunch. To make

UIS professor wins old-time
fiddle championship
Sharon Graf, assistant professor
of ethnomusicology at UIS, won the Illinois State Old-Time
Fiddle Championship held Sunday, September 5, at Rockhome
Gardens near Arcola. About 30 contestants competed in three
divisions: Senior (for contestants over 70), Junior (for
contestants 18 and younger), and Open (championship). In 2003,
Graf took third prize in the statewide competition after losing
a tie-breaker for second place to David Smith of Aurora. This
year, Graf and Smith tied again, this time for first place, and
Graf won. A member of UIS’ Sociology/Anthropology program
faculty since 2001, Graf directs co-curricular music activities
on campus. She also serves as president of the National Old-Time
Fiddlers Association.
Program
at UIS will examine “trendy drugs”
UIS will present “Trendy Drugs of
Abuse” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, in Brookens
Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on
the UIS campus. The program is free and open to the public.
Featured speaker will be Trinka Porrata, drug consultant and
retired narcotics detective with the Los Angeles Police
Department. Campus sponsors are the UIS Counseling Center,
Substance Abuse Task Force, Health Service, Housing Office, and
Police Department.
This program is presented in
conjunction with Project X, an initiative of Illinois Governor
Rod Blagojevich designed to promote community awareness, early
intervention, and education about Ecstasy, Methamphetamine, and
other club drugs. The Wells Center in Jacksonville is one of
nine sites chosen for Project X efforts in the state. Partial
funding is provided by the Illinois Department of Human
Services/Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. Porrata
will also lead a session from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 12
at UIS. This program is designed for school and mental health
counselors, law enforcement personnel,
