UIS to host foreign and independent film series

The Division of Student Affairs at UIS is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on Friday nights this fall. All films are at 7 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Films include: Oct. 1 – Rivers and Tides, Oct. 8 – The Magdalene Sisters, Oct.15 – Spirited Away, Oct. 22 – The Fog of War, Oct. 29 – Monster, Nov. 5 -The House of Yes, Nov. 12 – Pieces of April.

UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Aids of Language”

“Aids of Language: Paintings by Thom Whalen” will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the UIS from Oct. 6 - 28.  The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Oct. 7 with a talk at 5:30 p.m. and a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.  The talk, reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Thursday.

Register to vote NOW before the Oct. 5th deadline.  You can register to vote or change your registration address in the Women's Center, Student Affairs Building, Room 35.  The Women's Issues Caucus (WIC) student organization is giving away free T-shirts to students who register in the Women's Center and free tickets to one of three upcoming events courtesy of the Sangamon Auditorium: Capitol Steps, Ten Tenors or Invisible Man.  Please call Kathy or Lynn at 206-7173 to make an appointment to register and to find out what identification materials you need to bring.

 

Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series at UIS features Pulitzer Prize-winning author

Mark E. Neely, Jr., Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will deliver the first lecture in the Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series on Oct. 7 at UIS.  The theme of this year’s Series is “Ethics and Power.”

Neely’s talk, “Civil Liberties in Lincoln’s Presidency,” is at 7:30 p.m. in Brookens Auditorium. His lecture is free and open to the public. No reservations are required and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

UIS, AFSCME Local 805 reach agreement on salary increase

UIS and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, Local 805, have reached agreement on a salary increase of 3.1% for all bargaining unit members. The agreement is part of a wage reopener in the second year of a three-year contract. The increase was effective on Aug. 29, 2004 and covers seven grounds workers, two maintenance repair workers, an assistant grounds gardener and a grounds equipment mechanic, all of whom work in the Department of Physical Planning and Operations.

 

Taste of UIS to present overview of floodplain restoration

The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present “Floodplain of Dreams,” the second program in this fall’s Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series, Oct. 21 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 S. Sixth St., Springfield. Reservations are required and should be made by Oct. 14.

Discussion will examine American journalism and the Middle East

“Reporting the Arab and Muslim Worlds: American Journalism, Objectivity, and a Different Place” will be presented Oct. 6 at 7 p.m in Brookens auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.

Featured speaker will be Marda Dunsky, assistant professor in the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University. Dunsky’s experience as a reporter includes two years as Arab affairs reporter for the Jerusalem Post, covering the Palestinian minority in Israel, and a stint as features and national/foreign desk editor at the Chicago Tribune.

Program at UIS will examine “trendy drugs”

UIS will present “Trendy Drugs of Abuse” Oct. 12 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in Brookens. The program is free and open to the public.

This program is presented in conjunction with Project X; an initiative of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich designed to promote community awareness, early intervention and education about Ecstasy, Methamphetamine, and other club drugs.

Featured speaker will be Trinka Porrata, drug consultant and retired narcotics detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. Campus sponsors are the UIS Counseling Center, Substance Abuse Task Force, Health Service, Housing Office, and Police Department.

 

UIS Diversity Task Force setting up fall semester meeting schedule

The Diversity Task Force is scheduling meetings for the fall semester. If you are interested in participating as a member of the Task Force visit their website at http://www.uis.edu/aeo/dtf/dtf_join.htm to indicate your interests and availability.

Meetings will be either Wednesday or Thursday at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. or 4 p.m., whichever time is most convenient for the majority of interested members. Please indicate both a preferred day and time.

 

Beware! Flu shots are coming

UIS will be offering flu vaccinations Oct. 13 from 9:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Oct. 27 from 2 – 7 p.m. in the PAC, conference rooms C and D. Shots will be free to employees who present an employee ID card and proof of insurance with the State of Illinois. Shots will be $15.00 for employee’s significant others and employees who do not bring the required information.

Shots will also be available to students for $12.00.
