The Division of Student Affairs
at UIS is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on
Friday nights this fall. All films are at 7 p.m. in Brookens
Auditorium. Admission is free and the public is welcome to
attend.
Films include: Oct. 1 – Rivers
and Tides, Oct. 8 – The Magdalene Sisters, Oct.15 –
Spirited Away, Oct. 22 – The Fog of War, Oct. 29 –
Monster, Nov. 5 -The House of Yes, Nov. 12 –

Visual Arts Gallery presents “Aids of Language”
“Aids of Language: Paintings by
Thom Whalen” will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at
the UIS from Oct. 6 - 28. The exhibit is free and open to the
public.
The Visual Arts Gallery is
located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the
UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday -
Thursday.

Lincoln
Legacy Lecture Series at UIS
The Lincoln Legacy series will
conclude on Oct. 21 with “Lincoln’s Presidential Virtues,”
presented by William L. Miller, scholar in ethics and
institutions at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the
University of Virginia.
Miller is the author of
“Lincoln’s Virtues: An Ethical Biography,” and “Arguing about
Slavery.”
Retired from the UV faculty since
1999, Miller previously served that institution as professor of
Religious Studies, Commonwealth Professor, and Thomas C.
Sorensen Professor of Political and Social Thought. He received
his Ph.D. in Religious Social Ethics from Yale.
Miller’s talk will be at 7:30
p.m. in Brookens Auditorium.

Taste
of UIS to present overview of floodplain restoration
The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present
“Floodplain of Dreams,” the second program in this fall’s Taste
of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series,
Oct. 21 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 S.
Sixth St., Springfield. Reservations are required and should be
made by Oct. 14.
Cost – $18 per person, $13 for Alumni Association members and
their guests. Cost includes a hot buffet lunch. For

Women’s
Issues Caucus presents brown bag lunch seminar
The UIS Women’s Issues Caucus
will present “Domestic Violence: What can you do to help?” in
honor of Young Women’s Day of Activism from 12 – 1 p.m. on Oct.
21 in the PAC room D.
The event is being co-sponsored
by Sojourn Shelter, The Women’s Center and the Women’s Studies
program.

English program to host Trivia Night
The English program at UIS will
host a Trivia Night to benefit The Alchemist Review, UIS’ annual
literary journal, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in conference
room G of the PAC. The event is open to the public.
Teams of six to ten members will
compete for a $250 prize. Cost is
$10 per person. All proceeds will benefit the Alchemist
Review, a 30-year literary tradition at UIS. The Review presents
original creative works such as short fiction and non-fiction,
plays, poetry, essays and memoirs.

Earth Day
founder to speak at environmental conference at UIS
Denis Hayes, whom many consider the father of modern
environmentalism, will be the keynote speaker for “Our Living
World: The Challenge of Our Time” on Thursday, Oct. 28 in the
PAC at UIS.
A daytime session, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., will begin with an
address by Hayes on “Saving the Earth: What We Can Do Working
Together,” followed by sessions on Illinois environmental
problems and projects.
An afternoon program will focus on six international
environmental problems. Hayes will present “Thirty-Five Years
after Earth Day: How Are We Doing?” at 7:30 p.m.
The program is free and open to the public. A $10 buffet luncheon
will be available for those who register before Oct. 22. Send

UIS theater season
opens with ‘View of the Dome’
The Theater Program at UIS will open its 2004-2005 season with
the comedy “View of the Dome,” by Theresa Rebeck.
Six performances are scheduled for Nov. 5-7 and 12-14 in the
Studio Theatre, located on the lower level of the PAC at UIS.
Friday and Saturday show times are 8 p.m. and Sunday shows are
at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for the general public, $6 for UIS faculty and
staff, and $4 for UIS students with valid i-cards and can be
purchased now at the UIS Ticket Office. A limited number of
tickets will be available at the door one hour before curtain
time and can be purchased with cash only.

Concert
at UIS will present “global chamber music”
A concert of “global chamber music” by flutists Mark Holland and
Peter Phippen and percussionist N. Scott Robinson will be
presented by the Central Illinois Native American Flute Circle
and UIS at 8 p.m. Oct. 23, in the Studio Theatre, located in the
lower level of the PAC.
The trio will perform music in a hybrid of native-influenced,
jazz, classical, and folk styles that has been called
“thoughtful, animated, and reflective.”
Tickets are free to UIS students with valid ID and $10 for the
general public. They are available at the UIS ticket office and
at the door.

Prominent
abstract painter to speak at UIS Visual Arts Gallery
Prominent abstract artist Robert Natkin will open a new exhibit
of his works, which will be on display at the Visual Arts
Gallery at UIS, Nov. 4.
“Robert Natkin: Paintings and Prints” will open with a talk by
the artist on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the gallery,
followed by a reception from 6 - 8 p.m.
The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public.
The exhibit will run through Nov. 24.
