The Division of Student Affairs
at UIS is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on
Friday nights this fall. All films are at 7 p.m. in Brookens
Auditorium. Admission is free and the public is welcome to
attend.
Films include: Oct. 1 – Rivers
and Tides, Oct. 8 – The Magdalene Sisters, Oct.15 –
Spirited Away, Oct. 22 – The Fog of War, Oct. 29 –
Monster, Nov. 5 -The House of Yes, Nov. 12 –
Pieces of April.

Visual Arts Gallery to present “Aids of Language”
“Aids of Language: Paintings by
Thom Whalen” will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at
the UIS from Oct. 6 - 28. The gallery will host an evening with
the artist on Oct. 7 with a talk at 5:30 p.m. and a reception
from Center at 217/206-6576.6 to 8 p.m. The talk, reception and
exhibit are free and open to the public.
The Visual Arts Gallery is
located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the
UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday -
Thursday.

Lincoln
Legacy Lecture Series at UIS
Mark W. Summers, professor of
History at the University of Kentucky, will discuss “The
Politics of Patronage in Lincoln’s Era” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
October 14, in Brookens Auditorium.
Summers is the author of numerous
books, including The Era of Good Stealings and The
Plundering Generation: Corruption and the Crisis of the Union,
1848-1861. A member of the history faculty at UK since
1989, he teaches such topics as the Civil War and
Reconstruction, 19th century American history, and the history
of political cartoons.
Summers holds a Ph.D. from the
University of California at Berkeley.

UIS to present overview of floodplain restoration
The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present
“Floodplain of Dreams,” the second program in this fall’s Taste
of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series,
Oct. 21 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 S.
Sixth St., Springfield. Reservations are required and should be
made by Oct. 14.
Cost – $18 per person, $13 for Alumni Association members and
their guests. Cost includes a hot buffet lunch. For

Diversity Task Force set meeting time
The first meeting of the
Diversity Task Force is scheduled for 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Oct. 21 in
PAC 4E.
“A Time
to Ride” at UIS
On Oct. 14 the University of
Illinois Alliance and SASSI will host the Illinois premier of “A
Time to Ride.”
“A Time to Ride” tells the story
of Carrie and Elisia Ross-Stone, also known as the Rainbow
Grannies, and their search for justice and equality. Their
remarkable journey was captured on film by award winning
filmmaker, Keith Wilson (“Southern Family”).
The UIS Alliance, PRIDE IL, SASSI,
ACLU UIS, Springfield PFlag, and Heartland MCC are cosponsors of
the event which will be held at UIS Thursday Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
in the PAC room G. The public is invited to this free showing of
an important documentary film.
Women’s
Issues Caucus presents brown bag lunch seminar
The UIS Women’s Issues Caucus
will present “Domestic Violence: What can you do to help?” in
honor of Young Women’s Day of Activism on Oct. 21 in the PAC
room D.
The event is being co-sponsored
by Sojourn Shelter, The Women’s Center and the Women’s Studies
program.
Christian
Student Fellowship Meetings at UIS
The UIS Christian Student
Fellowship meets Fridays in the Housing Commons.
A free meal is served to all
students at 6 p.m., followed by live music and a Bible study at
7 p.m.
CSF is a group of students from
all different religious and non-religious backgrounds who are
interested in what the Bible has to say about life.
Other activities include small
group Bible studies, service projects, prayer groups, retreats
and conferences and social events.

Hayler
named University Scholar for 2004
Barbara Hayler, professor of
Criminal Justice at UIS, has been named University Scholar for
2004-2005. She is one of 15 faculty members, and the only one
from UIS, chosen for this award honoring and rewarding
outstanding teachers and scholars at the three U of I campuses.
Hayler will receive $10,000 a year
for three years to support research and other scholarly
activities.
Hayler’s teaching and research
interests focus on law and public policy, violence against women
and children, legal processes and criminal procedure, appellate
court review and corporate criminal liability. Materials
nominating her for the award cited her “excellent record in
scholarship, both in traditional journals and in grants
Hayler received the Ph.D. in political science from the
University of Washington in 1978. She also earned a M.A. at that
institution and holds a B.A. from the University of California,
Berkeley.
Volunteer
opportunity with Washington Middle School
Washington Middle School, 2300 E.
Jackson, is looking for mentors and tutors for children at hope
for sixth to eighth grade reading throughout the late Fall and
Spring semesters.
Tutors are needed for one to
three hour blocks during the school day, 8:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.,
and mentors are needed for one hour each week.
Training will be provided at the
school by Communities in Schools and Professionals at Washington
Middle School 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Nov.
10.
Background checks are required
and will be performed free of charge.
