Career Services to sponsor recruitment webcast

UIS will show a live webcast by Dr. Phil Gardner about recruitment trends in the job market on Nov. 19 from 9 – 11 a.m. in room 2008 of the University Hall Building.

Gardner, director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University, will present the findings of an annual survey of employers nationwide.

The webcast will address changes in campus recruitment strategies and techniques, anticipated changes in hiring trends for new college graduates and expected salaries by major and degree level. There will also be a one hour question and answer session.

The event is open to the campus community and sponsored by the UIS Career Services Center, GPSI Career Development Seminar and UIS Speakers Award Committee.

 Prominent abstract painter exhibit at UIS Visual Arts Gallery

Prominent abstract artist Robert Natkin will display an exhibit of his works at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery from Nov. 4 - 24.

The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday - Thursday.  For further information about the exhibit or the gallery, contact Emily Laverty at 206-6506.

Taste of UIS lecture series examines implications of new technology

The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present “Nanotechnology: How It Might Change Your Life,” the third and final program in this fall’s Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lecture Series.

The event will be Thursday, Nov. 18 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., at Maldaner’s Upstairs, 222 S. Sixth St., Springfield. Reservations are required and should be made no later than Friday, Nov. 12.

The featured speaker will be Ronald D. McNeil, dean of the UIS College of Business and Management.

Volunteer opportunity with Washington Middle School

Washington Middle School, 2300 E. Jackson, is looking for mentors and tutors for children at hope for sixth to eighth grade reading throughout the late fall and spring semesters.

Tutors are needed for one to three hour blocks during the school day, 8:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., and mentors are needed for one hour each week.

Training will be provided at the school by Communities in Schools and Professionals at Washington Middle School 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Nov. 10.

Background checks are required and will be performed free of charge.

 UIS Fall Music Showcase to feature four ensembles

The UIS Fall Music Showcase, featuring four musical ensembles, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in the Studio Theatre at UIS. The Studio Theatre is located on the lower level of the PAC.

Tickets for the program are $5 and all proceeds will benefit the UIS Music Student Scholarship Fund, which will present its first awards during this event.

Featured groups are the UIS Band, Chamber Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble, and Chorus. This concert represents the work that each group has done since the fall semester began in August.

 Multicultural student leadership retreat

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Springfield will be hosting a multicultural student leadership retreat on Jan. 14-16, 2005.

The program is designed to prepare participants to work with individuals of different backgrounds on campus and in the community and empower student leaders to take action.

 Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child, an event organized by the Christian organization Samaritan’s Purse, is being sponsored at the University of Illinois at Springfield by the Lincoln Residence Hall Resident Assistants.

To participate, fill a shoe box with toys, candy and other fun things and it will be delivered to a needy child in a third world country. Shoe boxes can be picked up between noon and 8 p.m. Nov. 16 at the LRH front desk.

Boxes must be turned in by Nov. 19.

 Volunteers needed to help wrap presents at Barnes & Noble

Your help is needed for Friday, Dec. 3 to fill two to three hour shifts wrapping presents with WIPA Radio Information Service at Barnes and Noble.

Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.  Wrapping paper and tape will be provided.
