Men fall to Brescia, Recover against Harris Stowe

By Mark Brockett

The general trend, as of late, for the men’s basketball team is to break even week in and week out. This is evident again this past week as the team fell to Brescia University, who is currently #25 in the NAIA poll, 76-69, and defeated Harris Stowe State College, 84-72. The team is now at an overall record of 12-11 and 5-3 in the American Midwest Conference.
In the Brescia game, the team trailed 11-0 right off the bat and major changes had to be made in order for a spark to ignite the team. Eventually, this took place as the Stars tied it up by halftime, 35-35. Unfortunately, rebounding was a key factor in the loss and the lack of key plays contributed as well. In defeat, Lincoln James had 25 points and led the team in scoring. Zach May chipped in with 12 of his own.
Harris Stowe provided the team with the opportunity to rebound and get back on the winning track. Wins in the conference are what is most important this time of the year. That is exactly what took place as the team led most of the way and never looked back. Randy Thomas came back from a tough game against Brescia and led the team with 19 points. James tallied 16 points and May included 12 once again.
This week is arguably the biggest week of the season for the Prairie Stars, They first play host to McKendree on Thursday night, February 26th at 7 pm. They then go on to host Missouri Baptist on Saturday as the second part of the double header that is scheduled. That game will tip off at 3pm.

Women beat Hornets, Tripped up by the Cougars

By Mark Brockett

Another week, another .500 record for a UIS basketball team. The women defeated the Hornets of Harris Stowe State College on the 17th, 80-60 while they were handled by the top team in the American Midwest Conference, Columbia College, on the 21st, 93-54. This puts the team at an overall record of 9-19 and 4-8 in conference play.
Against the Hornets, the team dominated much like they did the last time they were on the same court together. The Stars shot 53.0 percent from the field compared to the Hornets who only shot a dismal 31.9percent. The leading scorer for the Stars was Nicole Elkins, who tallied up 18 points. Myeshia Jones shot the lights out as well, scoring 16 and going 7-8 from the field. Zabrina Harper added 17 points respectively.
The Stars did not find the same luxuries against Columbia, however. The game was never really in doubt as the lead at the half was 50-25. Missed opportunities and turnovers were the story in this one. The team was only able to shoot 28.8 percent and weren’t able to stifle the offensive attacks that Columbia mustered. In the loss, Elkins had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Audrone Sulskyte had 13 as well with 10 rebounds, recording yet another double-double for the Stars.
The team looks to recover from the loss this week as they play at McKendree on the 24th. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7pm. Also, the final conference game of the season is on Saturday at 1pm here at the UIS gymnasium. The team hosts Missouri Baptist.
