Women's Tennis

The UIS women’s tennis team opened up what head coach Dominic Giacomini hopes is an exciting, new spring season with a tournament at Principia on February 14. The team did very well as far as individual performances are concerned.

Leadership was found in Christina Tabayoyong, who won 2 out of 3 matches on the day, including a 5-7, 6-2, 8-6 tie breaker victory over Trinity College in singles play. Jennifer Poss also won 2 out of 3 matches in singles play and along with her doubles partner, Tabayoyong, won two doubles matches over SIU Edwardsville and Southwestern Baptist by scores of 8-4 and 8-2.

Coach Giacomini also mentioned the strong play of senior Anna Dow, who won her singles match against Southwestern Baptist 6-4, 6-4. Freshmen Katie Popp had a tough day overall, eventually losing her last match in a tie breaker.

Despite that, Giacomini has high expectations for the young player. “Katie could have done better, but she has a lot of potential. Her last match of the day was a tie breaker loss and it could have gone either way.”

One of the matches that Giacomini cited was a 5-8 doubles loss to the #10 team in the nation. “Losing that closely isn’t bad at all against a team like that.”

The team, during the Fall season, had tallied 8 victories and no losses.. Heading into this Friday’s match-up with SIU Edwardsville, a NCAA Division II school, the team is looking for more great performances from as a whole, including Tabayoyong, Poss, Georgena Wulfers, Erin Sibley, and Dow. The match up takes place at 2pm.
