Men lose to Columbia, Drop William
Baptist
By
Mark Brockett
The Men’s team had a similar week as the
women did as they went 1-1 during this past week’s action. The
team traveled to Columbia on Thursday night and fell to the top
team in the American Midwest Conference, 88-74. The Stars
trailed 37-30 after the first half and deficit couldn’t be
decreased. Coumbia’s Khamari Ballard was too much for the Stars
as he scored a game high 40 points while shooting 12-16 from the
field. Despite the loss, the Stars found great play in Imo
Akhibi, who scored a team high 18 points and 6 rebounds. Also,
Kendrick Carr had 14 points in only 17 minutes of play and Randy
Thomas had 11 points with 2 assists. Saturday brought in
Williams Baptist as part of the second game of a doubleheader
here at UIS. The offensive action was explosive as the Stars put
up a big win, 102-85. A 49-37 half time lead was the difference
in this one as the team kept pace with the Eagles in the second
half. Lincoln James made his return to the UIS gymnasium by
scoring 27 points and Zach May had 22 of his own, including a
4-8 performance from three point land. Akhibi had 21 points as
he has contributed well during his short stint with the team.
The Stars look to get the ball rolling even more this week as
they play in Fulton, MO at Missouri Baptist this Tuesday night
at 7pm. At 10-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play, the Stars
are still a factor in the NAIA this year.
Lady Stars fall to
Missouri Baptist, defeat Williams Baptist
By Mark
Brockett
The week started out as far away from
auspicious than it could, but the women’s basketball team
finished with a big conference win on doubleheader Saturday. The
team lost on the road to Missouri Baptist on Tuesday night,
86-59. The Stars found little success in trying to stop the
offensive play of Missouri Baptist in the first half as they
were outscored 48-32. For the Stars, Audrone Sulskyte recorded
her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 15
rebounds. Chikayla Moss added 9 points and 1 assist for the
Stars. Nicole Elkins had 7 points of her own and 10 rebounds.
Saturday brought another opportunity to score a conference win
as the Stars hosted Williams Baptist. The records were thrown
out the window in this one and the game was hard fought
throughout. The Stars led 33-23 at the half and were able to
hold off the opposing offensive efforts in the second half.
Zabrina Harper continued her solid play in the friendly confines
of the “Assembly Closet” as she scored a game high 20 points and
had 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Jessica Lay chipped in 9 points,
along with Sulskyte. The overall record for the team after this
past weekend is 6-17. Up-coming is a match up with William Woods
University in Fulton, MO on Tuesday, February 10th. The tip-off
will be at 7pm.
