Office of Disability Services presented with donation
By Brandy Hager
GA Office of Disability Services
The UIS Office of Disability
Services was presented a $1000.00 check by Office Depot’s Regional
Manager, Dan Ladyman. ODS will use this donation to develop a
time management / organizational tool, the Academic Study
Organizer. The Academic Study Organizer assists students,
specifically students with disabilities, in developing effective
time management, organizational, and educational strategies.
The
instrument was first utilized in the office during the fall 2002
semester. At that time, it appeared to have advantages for
students with disabilities, particularly learning disabilities.
After tracking student use and progress for one full academic
year, the Office of Disability Services saw a decline in the
drop-out rate of students with learning disabilities using the
kit. At that time ODS discovered a demanding need for more
Academic Study Organizers; however due to budget cuts on the UIS
Campus there is a lack of funding for this project.
ODS Staff members Chrisa Potthast
and Brean Rhoades began to seek outside agencies to fund this
endeavor. After meeting with Dan Ladyman, Regional Manager of
Office Depot, there was an interest in funding this project. Mr.
Ladyman came into the Office of Disability Services to familiarize
himself with the work and the environment. He discovered an
evolving and innovative program in ODS. After talking with Office
Depot Corporate Executives, Mr. Ladyman delivered the great news
to ODS; we would be receiving a $1000.00 check to help fund our
project.
ODS will begin utilizing the
$1000.00 donation by purchasing binders, paper products, hole
punches and other materials necessary to complete the Academic
Study Organizers. Once the kits are complete they will be
available, free of charge, to students with disabilities.
