Spring
Showcase Concert
At 7:30 p.m.
on April 30th, in the Studio Theater, UIS Music groups will
present their Spring Showcase Concert. Admission to the concert is
$5 and tickets are now available to the public at the Sangamon
Auditorium Box Office. All proceeds go toward the UIS Music
Scholarship fund to assist outstanding student musicians with
their college expenses. The program will feature the UIS Band,
Chamber Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble and Chorus performing
a wide range of music including jazz, classical, and folk. For

50th
anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education
The entire
UIS community and the public is invited to attend a forum to
celebrate
the 50th anniversary
of Brown v. Board of Education on Thursday, April 29th
with the featured
speaker, Professor Tracey
Meares, Professor of Law
at the University of Chicago and Director of the Center for
Studies in Criminal Justice,
presenting
“Personal and Professional
Reflections on
Brown vs. Board of Education”.
Professor Meares grew up in
Springfield
and graduated from
Springfield
High School. She was denied the status
of valedictorian in 1980 because of her race. A
full reception will begin at
5:30-6:45 in PAC C-D. The forum
will start at 7:00 in Brookens Auditorium.
UIS Visual
Arts Gallery to present “Testing. . .”
“Testing. .
.,” an exhibit of works by five graduating seniors at UIS, will be
on display at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery from April 20 through
May 14. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, in the gallery. The reception and exhibit are
free and open to the public. The show features a diverse body of
drawings, graphics, paintings, and photographs by Johnny Powers,
Stan Bly, Jennifer Preston, Brian Alling, and Curtis Reed in a
compilation that “embodies the unique talent of the Visual Arts
program” at UIS. Gallery hours are
11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through

Intramural
Tennis Doubles Tournament
The doubles
tournament will take place on Saturday, May 1 at 10:30 am at the UIS Tennis Courts. Come and register in the Campus Rec Sports
Office by Monday, April 26 at
11 pm. The event is free to UIS
Students and Rec Center Members with valid i-cards. UIS Non-Rec
Center Members and Non UIS are required to pay a $10 fee (Non-UIS
must sign waiver form). For more information, contact Dale

Idealism in Action Award recognizes UIS commitment to civic
engagement initiatives
UIS has
received the first-ever Idealism in Action Award presented by the
Campus Outreach
Opportunity League. The award was
made at the organization’s annual conference, the
largest national event of its kind,
held March 12-14 at the University of
Pennsylvania and attended by
some 2,000 students, campus administrators, and nonprofit
organizations. COOL’s mission is to educate, connect, and
mobilize college students and their campuses to strengthen
communities through service and action. For more information,

CLS Seniors placed 2nd
in the Student Bowl Competition
Last Thursday the CLS Seniors placed 2nd in the Student Bowl
Competition at the Illinois ASCLS State meeting in Lisle. On the
team were Stacia Galvin, Darci Martin, Carol Gee, Mike Meng and
alternate Markos Weldegabriel. The team won three games and were
defeated in the championship game by the students in the MS
program from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
UIS also had a second team participating which included Rebekah
Whyers, Valarie Medley, Jayme Larmon, Kim Thiede. This team won
their first game but was eliminated by the masters students from
Rush.
Paula Garrott, Program
Director for CLS, was named Member of the Year at the meeting.
