Softball Breaks Even, Gains
Conference Wins
By
Mark Brockett
The UIS women’s softball
team tallied a sweep of conference foe Hannibal LaGrange on the
13th by the scores of 5-4 in game one and 1-0 in the
second game of the doubleheader. However, they dropped both
games of the doubleheader in Oakland City, IN on the 17th
4-0 and 6-2. This leaves the team with an overall record of
9-23.
In the Hannibal LaGrange
match ups, the games came down to the wire and the team rallied to
win in the final at bats in both contests. In the first game, Sara
Boothman hit the game winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth
which scored Christie Wantland. Sara Abu-Tayeh pitched eight
innings, gave up four runs on 11 hits, walked three and struck out
four. In the second game, Katie McBride started the seventh inning
with a triple, followed by Rebekah Bandy's second double of the
day to score the winning run. Katie Kuschell pitched seven
innings, allowing no runs on two hits, two walks, and one
strikeout.
The momentum from the home
win did not prove to be enough on the road with Oakland City. The
Stars’ Chikayla Moss opened the game with a single, but that was
not a sign of things to come in game one. The team had only three
hits in the shut out loss.
In game two, Wantland had an
RBI by reaching on an error to give the Prairie Stars and early
1-0 lead. However, Oakland City countered with a two run second
inning. The Stars weren’t able to score after that until the
seventh inning by McBride putting the ball in play and reaching on
an error to score Grazia Silvestro.
With the split this past
week, the team looks to get back on the winning track on the 20th
against Missouri Baptist in St. Louis, MO.
Women’s Tennis
Dominates in Final Two Matches
By Mark
Brockett
The UIS women’s tennis team couldn’t have
finished their season any better than they did this past
weekend. The team swept Baker University on the 17th, 9-0 and
did the same thing on the 18th against Missouri Valley. With
these wins, the team has finished the regular season 15-1 and #1
in the NAIA Region V. Also, the team is ranked in the NAIA top
25.
In the Baker match up, the number seven was certainly beneficial
for the Prairie Stars. For the team, it was the seventh straight
victory. Erin Sibley and Katie Popp improved their individual
winning streaks to seven straight by winning in convincing
fashion. Sibley won in her match by the scores of 6-0, 7-6 (7-5)
and Popp notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory. In doubles play, Popp and
her partner in #3 doubles, Nicole Frkol, won their 7th in a row
as well, defeating their opponents 8-6.
In other action, Georgina Wulfers, the teams #1 tennis player,
got back on the winning track this week by winning both singles
and doubles. In her singles match, the result would not be in
doubt as she won 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, her and her partner, Erin
Sibley, played their game and came out victorious, 8-5.
Christina Tabayoyong won her singles match by the scores of 7-5
and 6-0. Jennifer Poss put up a win of 6-3, 6-1. Together, they
won #2 doubles 8-6.
At press time, the team has won 8 straight matches. With the
victory over Missouri Valley, Coach Dominic Giacomini and his
team will head to St. Joe, Missouri to play in the Regional
Tournament. The winner of this will receive an automatic bid
into the NAIA national tournament. Giacomini is confident in the
preparation process that the team is going to go through during
this tournament format.
