SGA Candidate Profiles

Be sure to vote online April 27th and 28th

Tyson Roan: Sophomore Candidate for President

Programs and policy should be reflective of the needs of this campus’ entire population, which includes transfer, graduate, and international students.

I promise to do everything in my power as SGA President to assure that the integrity of the Capital Scholars’ program in maintained.

I vow to support student life and student activities through adequate funding and support of the student activities committee and inter-club council board.

James Greer: Senior Candidate for President

If I am elected President I will right the wrongs of the previous administration. Student housing is the worst run department on campus. On numerous occasions, they have taken advantage of student rights. How has SGA responded to this so far: BY DOING NOTHING. Housing issues must be addressed; tuition increases must be addressed. I will not only address these issues as SGA president, I will make sure that all students, both present and future, can have a university they are proud to attend.

Brace Clement: Junior Candidate for President

I feel that the most pressing issues facing our student body and its surrounding community is that there is not enough connection of the two. We must provide more social alternatives for students and promote civic engagement with our surrounding community through service learning. We must increase the number of meeting, activity, and event spaces available for students. Including spaces that are controlled by the student body (i.e. a student center) We must increase the availability of classes provided each semester, so that a student is able to graduate in a timely manner.

Andrew Hollingsead: Junior Candidate for Student Trustee

As UIS Student Trustee, I have been committed to preserving the affordability of a UIS education through my work to expand funding for the MAP Grant program.  I secured a 1.5% increase in MAP funding. In these times of challenge, it is essential that UIS be represented on the University of Illinois Board of Trustees by someone who can maintain current academic programs, student services, minimize student costs, bring about new initiatives, and deal with shrinking state appropriations.  When considering your vote for Student Trustee, please consider my record of doing just that as Student Trustee during this academic year.

Jason Stuebe: Junior Candidate for Student Trustee

For far too long, the board has not heard the voice of UIS. We have allowed Urbana and Chicago to silence and overshadow us. UIS has a lot to offer, and at this juncture we can no longer afford to be ignored.  It is time we sent someone to the Board of Trustees that has the real student and campus interests at heart.  I ask for your vote so that I can provide the representation to the Board of Trustees that UIS deserves and continue to make this campus an invaluable asset to the U of I system.

Dee Dee Nunu: Junior Candidate for Vice-President

The reason I chose to run is because after spending a year at UIS I believe I can make needed changes to the way we do business. If I am made VP I would make sure that student life is made more interesting and help more students get involved in order to create a more exciting campus. I would speak boldly against unfair rules, and get things changed. I would also lend an open ear to the complaints of students and, as an international minority student, help to speak for those students whose voices are not heard. Most importantly, I would help give this school a better name and work hand in hand with the President and other members of the SGA to make UIS one of the best schools in the country.

Carrie Bauer: Junior Candidate for Vice-President

If elected I hope to bring the same integrity to this institution, the UIS SGA, and the position of Vice President. The current issues that are the most pressing here on the UIS campus are student activities, the relationship between the administration and the students, and the connection between both the UIS and Springfield community. I think it is essential that the SGA advocate for less restrictions on freedom of speech, recreational areas for students, and events that encompass the interests of all students. It is imperative that we cater to our commuter-based students as well as to our on-campus students. If I am elected I hope that I will be able to further the progress and growth that this campus has already made.

Daniel Kovats: Senior Candidate for Sergeant at Arms

One of my major concerns that I have is the lack appreciation that transfer students receive. The school administration has glorified the Capital Scholar program so much that they have forgotten who gave this school its start. I plan to be a voice for the transfer students so that they are no longer forgotten. Another major concern I have is the lack of involvement that SGA has with the students on campus. I plan to address real concerns that students have so that the SGA is not a place were political science students can play politics.

Nicholas Roman: Sophomore Candidate for Sergeant at Arms

I feel I would make an excellent representative of my constituents in this position by faithfully upholding the spirit and letter of SGA Constitution, maintaining order and decorum at all SGA sessions, and using my vote to support the wishes of the residents of this community. As an officer of the SGA, I would use my position to defend the rights of students against the abuses of unilateral actions by the University without due process and student consent. I would speak up for minority, international, transfer students, the faculty and staff, and all others whose voices may not be heard, while fulfilling my pledge to the CAP Scholars.

Jason Kennedy: Junior Candidate for Treasurer

My goal, if elected SGA Treasurer, will be to increase the transparency and the availability of information regarding the balance of student fee money.  I want a hands on approach to the appropriation of this money.  This is student fee money and should be administered by the students. We must, as a student body, rely less on the administration and more on ourselves to handle student affairs on this campus, especially student affairs concerning student fee money. If elected I will spearhead this initiative and be a servant to the students of UIS, which is the over-riding job of all members of your SGA.

Brianna Hudkins: Freshman Candidate for Secreatary

I’ll be a good secretary first and foremost because I want to be. I’m attentive and take good notes, and I have the ability to take criticism, which I think will help in the beginning as how some duties are new. I believe that everyone on SGA should be an advocate of the people, and based on the events this year such as the dorm expansion, a possible retirement home, and a possible driving range, I believe it is more important now than ever to have non complacent people on SGA. We need people who are going to make sure that the student’s voices are heard in the on going decision made about the future of this campus, and as secretary I hope to still be that voice, while fore willing my other duties.

Samantha Drews: Freshman Candidate for Rep from the Capital Scholars Program

I am running for the Capital Scholar Program representative due to strong ties I see between wants and needs of the Capital Scholars students and the power the Student Government Association has to carry out these desires. As next years representative I plan to facilitate a great deal of communication between not only the Capital Scholar students but the Capital Scholars faculty as well. I believe there are many lingering concerns from not only the 2003-2004 year such as parking and student life. As the Capital Scholars Representative I plan to dedicate myself to voicing the concerns and ensuring that the Capital Scholars’ needs are met.

Saira Malik: Junior Candidate for Rep from College of Business and Management

My part in the student government thus far (as a Representative at Large) has been one of listening and construction.  I plan to continue my contribution as a sincerely concerted student leader of this campus in the student government as a representative of one of my colleges. I plan to use my skills as an effective collaborator to bring a more forthright voice to not only the students of the College of Business and Management, but also to the student body as a whole.  I also desire to encourage more activity from the UIS community regarding student issues, and help unite our diverse student body with common goals regarding campus development.

James Brower: Freshman Candidate for Representative at Large

As Representative at Large for the University of Illinois at Springfield’s student body, I will strive through my commitment and your trust to broaden he horizons of the on-campus community, student life and academics. I plan to help initiate and develop new student-affiliated activities through related organizations in conjunction with the Student Government Association. With the voice of students, I will bring their comments and concerns up to the highest level of importance. Serving as the mediator for student to administrator communications, I will devote my time to see your suggestions are considered in building a better education and student life for future and current students to the UIS community.

Justin Sweigart: Junior Candidate for Representative at Large

The most important issue facing any student governing body is the maintenance of fundamental student rights. Students have the inherent right to explore their full individualism, and it is the duty of the SGA to protect that. One of my objectives through the next year will be to work with the Sergeant At Arms to review and conduct a complete rewrite of the Student constitution to remove errors enacted through the last couple of years. I also strongly feel that a uniform procedure for the oversight of clubs and organizations is important to the efficiency of the overall body. These are just some of the things I will argue for it if elected as a Representative at Large.

Robert Skorczewski: Freshmen Candidate for SGA Representative at Large

As SGA Representative at Large, I would do my best to serve the interests of the students of UIS.  I think the most important thing I can promise is to talk to students about the issues and to give my honest opinion and the opinions of other students at meetings.  I will also try to serve on committees in order to further the interests of UIS students, and to try to make positive changes in and still maintain the integrity of the University of Illinois at Springfield.
