UIS Spring foreign and independent film series

Student Life is sponsoring an Independent and Foreign Film Series on Friday nights this spring. UIS participates in Earth Week

The Department of Environmental Studies will host 2 events in observance of Earth Week that focus on the theme “The Greening of Public Institutions.” At 7 p.m. April 21, Jack Barnette, environmental scientist/indoor air specialist with the U.S. EPA Region 5, will present “Indoor Air Quality in Green and Sustainable Buildings: What You Need to Know to Get Started.” The event is free, open to the public, and will be held in Brookens Auditorium.  For more information contact Darlene Powell, Environmental Studies graduate assistant, at 206-7874.


Fourth Annual UIS Science Research Symposium to feature evolutionary geneticist

Dr. Rob DeSalle, curator at the American Museum of Natural History, New York, will present “The Utility of Evolutionary Thinking in Making Sense of Biomolecules and Biomaterials,” is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Fourth Annual UIS Science Research Symposium, to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 23, in Brookens Auditorium.  Undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty in science programs at UIS and colleges will give presentations on the 2nd floor of HSB.  Awards will be given for best student presentations.  The entire symposium is free and open to the public. UIS/LLCC event will observe National Volunteer Week 2004

The Office of Student Volunteers and Service Learning at UIS and the Community Volunteer Center at LLCC will co-sponsor a Volunteer Recognition program from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in the Atrium Lounge of UIS’ PAC. Ethics in the Workplace Workshop

“Ethics in the Workplace” is a new workshop that has been scheduled for June 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Conference Room C/D of PAC. Retirement Reception

On Wednesday, April 28th a reception will be held from 2 to 4P.M. in the PAC Atrium Lounge to celebrate the retirement of Judy Bohlen after 18 years at UIS.  Come and wish her well on her upcoming wedding in Hawaii.

 

2nd Annual Technology Day – April 23rd  is…

On Friday from 10:30A.M.-1:30P.M. come conference rooms PAC C/D, F, and in the main concourse.  Learn about the technology innovations that have taken place at UIS.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lanny Arvan, Assistant CIO for Educational Technologies/Associate Professor of Economics at University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign, presenting Dialogic Learning Objects and Beyond.

Liturgical and Sacred Art Exhibition May 1-May 29

                In cooperation with the Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield, the Springfield Art Association presents a juried exhibit of liturgical and sacred art in the SAA Gallery.  The exhibit is part of the biennial, inter-faith Liturgical Arts Festival: Come Creative Spirit.  The exhibition opening reception and awards ceremony will be held on May 1st from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Springfield Art Association, 700 North 4th Street.  The presentation and awards ceremony begins at 6:00 pm.  The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  For more information, contact Erika Fitzgerald,                    Executive Director, 523-2631.


Spring Showcase Concert

At 7:30 p.m. on April 30th, in the Studio Theater, UIS Music groups will present their Spring Showcase Concert. Admission to the concert is $5 and tickets are now available to the public at the Sangamon Auditorium Box Office.  All proceeds go toward the UIS Music Scholarship fund to assist outstanding student musicians with their college expenses. The program will feature the UIS Band, Chamber Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble and Chorus performing a wide range of music including jazz, classical, and folk.  For more information about the concert or musical programs at UIS, contact Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology in the Sociology/Anthropology program, at 206-6570.

 

50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education

The entire UIS community and the public is invited to attend a forum to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education on Thursday, April 29th with the featured speaker, Professor Tracey Meares, presenting “Personal and Professional Reflections on Brown vs. Board of Education”.  Professor of Law at the University of Chicago and Director of the Center for Studies in Criminal Justice.  Professor Meares grew up in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High SchoolShe was denied the status of valedictorian in 1980 because of her race.  A full reception will begin at 5:30-6:45 in PAC C-D.  The forum will start at 7:00 in Brookens Auditorium.

 

UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Testing. . .”

“Testing. . .,” an exhibit of works by five graduating seniors at UIS, will be on display at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery from April 20 through May 14.  An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, in the gallery.  The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. The show features a diverse body of drawings, graphics, paintings, and photographs by Johnny Powers, Stan Bly, Jennifer Preston, Brian Alling, and Curtis Reed in a compilation that “embodies the unique talent of the Visual Arts program” at UIS.
