Softball Struggles in Tough Week of
Match-Ups, Improves Next Week
By
Mark Brockett
In hopes of sparking a
turn-around by playing their first home games of the season, the
UIS Women’s softball team split the double header with William’s
Baptist on the 30th of March and went on to drop two
games to Quincy University on the first of April. With the 1-3
record for the week, the team improved to an overall mark of
5-16 and 1-3 in the American Midwest Conference.
The first ever home game was
the bright side of the otherwise rough week. The team scored 4 key
runs in the second inning and didn’t look back the rest of the
way, winning 9-4. Rebekah Bandy was the core of the offensive
explosion, scoring three runs and driving in five in the game.
Chikayla Moss also scored two runs respectively. Katie Kuschell
picked up a well-deserved win by going the full seven innings,
giving up six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and struck out
five.
In game 2, the team lost a
hard fought contest where the end was in doubt until the final
out, 6-5. Five of the six William’s Baptist runs came in the first
two innings. In relief of starter Laura Fager, Sara Abu-Tayeh gave
up only one more run and struck out five hitters. Offensively,
Christie Wantland drove in two runs and Kuschell scored one and
drove in one as well.
Quincy University was the
next mountain to climb for the Prairie Stars. Unfortunately, they
didn’t quite reach the top. The team played tough in the first
game, but still fell 4-2. Quincy scored three in the second
inning, which proved to be the difference in the game. Sara Abu-Tayeh
received the loss, pitching six full innings, allowing nine hits,
four earned runs, one walk, and striking out one. Bandy led the
way offensively for the second time in the week going 2-3 on the
day. Included in that were one run she scored and two that she
drove in.
Quincy once again scored
three early runs in game two and never looked back, shutting out
the Prairie Stars, 6-0. With no runs being scored, the team had
only four total hits in the contest. Kuschell pitched six innings,
allowing eight hits, six earned runs, no walks, and struck out
four.
The Stars played in the
Robert Morris College tournament in Springfield during the weekend
of the 3rd and 4th of April. The team found
that hard work pays off as they ran a perfect 3-0 mark on the 3rd,
including victories over Purdue North Central (3-1) and U of I in
Urbana Champaign (3-0). Against Purdue, Abu-Tayeh pitched a gem,
going seven full innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, and
struck out three. Offensively, Katie McBride drove in two and
scored one. On the 4th, the team fell to The Fighting
Illini 5-4 in a nine inning heartbreaker. This would carry over to
this past week in regards to game play. The team lost five of
their six games, four of them in doubleheaders with Williams Woods
and McKendree. They ended up splitting with Oakland University,
winning the second game of that doubleheader. The team has an
overall record now of 7-17.
Women’s Tennis At
the Top of Their Game, Sets, and Matches
By Mark
Brockett
The UIS women’s
tennis team continues to notch victory after victory. Over the
weekend of April 2nd through the 4th, Coach Dominic Giacomini’s
squad had wins over McKendree and over William Jewell.
On Friday, April
2nd, The team traveled to McKendree and dominated by a score of 8
- 1. On the 3rd, they beat the 17th NAIA ranked William Jewell at
McKendree, 6 - 3. This was the team’s sixth consecutive victory on
the year and their record, at press time, is 13 - 1.
Individually,
Christina Tabayoyong won two singles matches, including a 6-3, 6-0
stomping against William Jewel. Erin Sibley and Katie Popp both
recorded their sixth consecutive singles victories as well. In the
doubles portion of the day, Tabayoyong and Jennifer Poss won a
hard fought #2 match against William Jewel, 8-6. Popp and her
partner, Nicole Frkol, won 8-2.
These two
victories, according to coach Giacomini, are even more preparation
for the NAIA Region V playoffs. If they qualify, it will be the
UIS women’s 8th trip to NAIA nationals. The last time the team
qualified was in Spring 2000. That team tallied an overall record
of 17-5. The team is scheduled to play this weekend on the 17th
and 18th against Baker University at 10am and Missouri Valley
College at 2pm. Both of these matches will be played at Washington
Park and will be the last regular season matches for the year.
Fighting Illini of UIUC brings
nationally ranked Wheelchair Basketball Team to UIS
By
Mark Brockett
On the 29th of March, the
Fighting Illini of UIUC brought 5 players from their nationally
ranked Wheelchair Basketball
Team to UIS for the7th Annual
Wheelchair Basketball Game. The game coincides with Disabilities
week here on the UIS campus. The UIS Wheelies consisted of
players ranging from students and faculty. The Wheelies suited
up and took the court with a slight advantage. A 2 pointer would
be worth 4 for UIS, and a 3-pointer would put 8 points on the
scoreboard. Even with this advantage,
the Wheelies were
outscored 32-8 in the first 20 minute half of the game. UIS was
given an extra 20 points to make it a 1 shot game going into the
second half. The Wheelies played much better in the second half,
until UIUC put a very intense full-court press on. At this
point, UIS decided that it would be best to put 8 players on the
court to handle it, and got back in the game. However, they
could not pull off the win and lost by 8, 64-56. Despite the
defeat, all that participated had a great time.
Brad J. Ward, a UIS sophomore and Resident Assistant in the
Lincoln Residence Hall said, "This was my 2nd year playing in
the game, and it is something I will look forward to for
upcoming years. It really puts things into perspective of how
lucky I am to be able to get out of the chair and walk back to
the dorm. The other players were all very friendly, and that
makes the game fun. I think they took it easy on us too!" Both
teams will roll onto the court next year in what is becoming an
entertaining tradition here on campus.
