These directions apply to Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. If you do not have Service Pack 2 installed, please visit the Microsoft Update site and download Service Pack 2.

  1. Find the wireless network icon  in the system tray (bottom right of the screen). Right click this and select View Available Networks.
  2. If the network uiswlan is in the list, select it and connect. If you can connect, skip the next step.
  3. If uiswlan is not in the list or it will not connect, click Change advanced setting on the left hand side.
  4. On the window that pops up, select the Wireless Networks tab.
  5. Remove any entries for UIS in the list (including uiswlan and UISGuest).
  6. Click the add button.
  7. The network name is uiswlan.
  8. The Network Authentication type is Open.
  9. The Data encryption type is Disabled.
  10. Click OK twice.

It may take a second to apply the changes, but your computer should connect to the wireless network.  If you have any problems, it is recommended that you contact the helpdesk (see below).

Use the Cisco Systems VPN client to access the wireless network

  1. Remove any previous versions of the Cisco Systems VPN Client. This can be done from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
  2. Run the installer. This could take a few minutes to complete and will restart your computer, so save your work and exit any programs before you begin.
  3. Start the VPN Client software, select the UIS Wireless profile, and click connect. Type in your NetID and password when prompted, and you're connected!
