spyware

Spyware is a part of computer life these days. Spyware are programs that in most cases are installed on your computer without your knowledge. They are hidden in many different ways via banner ads and other types of links in internet browsers. They can track and report your Internet browsing tendencies, slow down your computer or cause it to malfunction is strange ways. The best thing to do is avoid spyware. You can do this by:

  • Not clicking on unsolicited popups
  • Not clicking on interactive banner ads
  • Saying no to any unsolicited install prompts
  • Avoiding "questionable" websites
  • Not installing the following programs:
    1. WeatherBug
    2. Gator
    3. Internet Explorer Toolbars
    4. Search Assistants

However, should your computer become infected with spyware, there are a couple of ways to get rid of it. Campus Technology Services recommends two such programs: Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot - Search and Destroy. See the FAQ page for for instructions on how to use these two programs.
