What Do You Say When They Ask You About Jobs?

Lola L. Lucas
Adjunct GPSI

Abstract:
Students ask you for career advice that is specific to your field. Are you prepared with current facts about occupational wages and outlook in Illinois and nationwide? What about the job leads? Learn about resources that can help your students find employment and make use of what you've taught them.

Content:
Alumni, new graduates and students are often advised to ask their favorite faculty member (of course, that is you) for suggestions on their careers. This session will give you the tools to quickly find the latest facts and figures about employment in your discipline. Federal and state sites offer up to date labor market information while professional associations and commercial sites may have the most targeted job leads.

This session will be valuable to anyone who helps others with career issues. It will provide a quick tour of the most useful Internet sites plus extensive handouts. When your students and alumni come to you for assistance, you'll be prepared with resources that go far beyond the question, "What can I do with a major in ____?"
