Using Elluminate to conduct Student Writing Workshops

Kandice Biggs
Writing Specialist, Center for Teaching and Learning

Abstract:
After receiving numerous requests from online and on-ground students for online writing workshops, the Center for Teaching and Learning created nine online writing workshops using Elluminate software for the Spring 2007 semester. This presentation will discuss the benefits of using the software for the writing workshops, how the staff uses the software to conduct the writing workshops, and the staff and student feedback about the online workshops.

Content:
This presentation will focus on three aspects of conducting Elluminate writing workshops: 1) the benefits of using the software for the writing workshops, 2) how the staff uses the software to conduct the workshop, and 3) the staff and student feedback about the online workshops as a guide for future strategies. To explain the benefits of using the software, I will compare Elluminate to other mediums. Then, I will conduct an Elluminate workshop with two members of the writing staff so that the audience can view the format of a typical online writing workshop. Finally, I will present the staff and student feedback we have received from the workshops we have conducted. After the presentation, the audience will then have an open discussion about ways they could use Elluminate for their department's services.
