UIS students, faculty, and staff have access to a rich collection of software applications for general computing, research, and multimedia development. Faculty may request additional software in support of their instruction by sending e-mail to tllos1@uis.edu with a description of the classroom need. Requests must be made eight weeks in advance, and request fulfillment is contingent on availability of funding.

WebStore
As a new service provided by Information Technology Services, the Software WebStore distributes many software packages for free or at a fraction of their usual costs. Students and faculty can enjoy prices as high as 80% off the retail or academic prices found in most stores. Logon to WebStore to start taking advantage of these incredible savings. Turning Point
TurningPoint™ Software enables educators, trainers and presenters to administer real-time, assessments of audience participants from within MS PowerPoint. With TurningPoint™, your PowerPoint installation transforms into a tool that can seamlessly identify and confirm participant understanding, increase participant attentiveness and comprehension, gather, rank and report critical information simultaneously with your delivery of live face-to-face events. Further analysis of student input can be provided via TurningPoint™ functionality that moves data into preformatted MS Excel and MS Word templates. Communicate and share information collected with Microsoft Outlook.

U of I Oracle Site License
The Oracle site license covers a set of Oracle server products for educational, research, and administrative use and 24/7 support for all students, faculty and staff at all University of Illinois campuses. The products covered under the license include:

  • Oracle 9i application server
  • Oracle 10g application server
  • Oracle 9i client
  • Oracle 10g client
  • Advanced Security
  • Diagnostics Management Pack
  • Tuning Management Pack

You can download Oracle software from the Oracle TechNet website. You can also purchase Oracle software on hard media [CD Packs] from the Oracle Store website.

Webster
Webster is the software used with the interactive electronic whiteboards in the University Hall smart classrooms. With Webster you can capture a snapshot of anything you write or draw on the interactive whiteboard. Webster software records all whiteboard activities for you to save, use in other applications, print, or distribute.

Microsoft Office
MS Office for Windows [Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and FrontPage] and Office for Apple OS X [Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage] are available free of charge for faculty and staff office and home PCs and Macs. Faculty and staff may obtain a copy of the Office Suite software via the UIS Software WebStore. Within WebStore, you will be able to choose a location for pickup, either BRK180 in Brookens Building or the Technology Support Center in the Health Science Building.

Students may purchase MS Office at a significant educational discount from the WebStore.

Apple OS X AMP
AMP is an update subscription program through Apple where Macintosh OS X users get all the released versions of the OS for the next three years. Whether it is OS 10.3 or OS 11, all updates for the next three years are covered. Please e-mail Clay Bellot [cbell1@uis.edu] for additional information.

Geographic Information System [GIS] Software
ESRI [Environmental Systems Research Institute] produces software and data for geographical information systems. UIS has joined the Urbana-Champaign and the Chicago campus licensing agreement for a suite of ESRI software. The software suite included: ArcGIS, ArcView, Arc/Info, Spatial Analyst, and 3D Analyst. ESRI ArcView & ArcGIS
ArcGIS is an integrated collection of GIS [Geographic Information System] software products for building a complete GIS. UIS has a campus-wide site license for this software suite. E-mail tllos1@uis.edu for more information and to request a copy.

Macromedia
Macromedia's wide variety of multimedia development software is now available for purchase through the WebStore. Available products include Studio MX, Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, Fireworks MX and Director MX.

Respondus
Respondus is a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard.† To download your copy of Respondus, please visit WebStore.

NOTE: †The campus license of Respondus is available [free] to any UIS faculty [instructor, teaching assistant, staff, etc.] wishing to easily create exams or surveys for online testing through Blackboard.

Adobe Acrobat
Acrobat is tool for creating PDF files with ease, reviewing and marking up student work, and archiving documents as PDF files. ITS provides this software free of charge to all current UIS faculty by request. To receive your copy, please visit WebStore.

Mathematica
Mathematica is a program for performing numerical and symbolic mathematical calculations with many built-in graphical capabilities. Mathematica is installed on all lab and classroom PCs and is available for faculty and staff office PCs and Macs. Students may purchase Mathematica at a minimal cost from the WebStore.

SPSS
SPSS is installed on many lab and classroom PCs and is available for faculty office and home PCs by request. Please contact Dixie Vaught at 206-7350 [e-mail: DVaug1@uis.edu] to arrange for installation or upgrade.

SAS
The SAS System, originally Statistical Analysis System, is an integrated system of software products provided by the SAS Institute that enables the programmer to perform:

  • data entry, retrieval, management, and mining
  • report writing and graphics
  • statistical and mathematical analysis
  • business planning, forecasting, and decision support
  • operations research and project management
  • quality improvement
  • applications development
  • warehousing ( extract, transform, load )

NetOps School
This software is available in BRK 413, PAC 493, UHB 2025, UHB 2028, UHB 2030, and Cisco networking labs. NetOps allows the faculty to broadcast their computer screens to all the PCs in the lab, and take control of another computer for instruction or demonstration purposes.

Microsoft MSDN Academic Alliance Membership

Computer Science and Management Information System departments are members of the MSDN Academic Alliance program. The membership helps keep academic labs, faculty, and students on the leading edge of Microsoft technologies.

Guidelines

MIS and Computer Science departments in which you take credit courses are authorized to provide you with program software for use on your personal computer. To be in compliance with the MSDN Academic Alliance program requirements, you must follow these usage guidelines when using the software on your computer. You must also agree to the terms of the MSDN End User License Agreement [EULA], the Amendment to Master End-User License Agreement, and any conditions required by your department.

ITS is the MSDNAA Site Administrator at UIS. We are responsible for maintaining records of student use and ensuring there is full compliance with the program among all department users, including students, faculty and systems administration staff. Please e-mail the Technology Support Center [techsupport@uis.edu] for any questions that you may have about the program, or refer to the MSDN Academic Alliance Developer Center.

Installation Guidelines

All software reproduced for checkout will be a complete copy, and include all copyright and trademark notices.

You must be registered in at least one credit course within the MIS or Computer Science department to be eligible to load program software on your personal use computer. Students registered solely for non-credit courses in the department[s] are not eligible to receive program software.

You may not give copies of loaned/downloaded software to anyone else for their use. Other qualifying students must obtain software via the method[s] set up by the MSDNAA Site Administrator.

In order to install certain components, you may need a Product Key. The Product Key will be assigned solely to download authorized software. You may not disclose the Product Key information to anyone else.

The MSDNAA Site Administrator will maintain records of software downloaded from server or checked out, and will provide those records to Microsoft upon request.

Usage Guidelines

Your may use the software for non-commercial purposes including instructional use, research and/or design, development and testing of projects for class assignment and tests or personal projects. You may not use the program software for any for-profit software development.

When you are no longer a registered student in the MIS or Computer Science departments, you may no longer receive updates for your personal use computer. However, you may continue to use previously installed software on your computer, provided you continue to follow program guidelines.
