Apple's iPhone has generated a great amount of interest on university campuses this summer. ITS at UIS is working hard to maximize the benefits of the iPhone for members of the UIS community who choose to use the iPhone. We will keep you updated as we address user interface issues and learn more about the utility of the iPhone.
Set forth below are instructions for obtaining an iPhone and for using the iPhone for internet, email, and calendaring. If there is an iPhone related feature that you would like ITS to address in more depth or an iPhone tool that you have found useful for teaching, working, or learning, please drop us a line at techsupport@uis.edu and let us know.
iPhone units may only be purchased through an AT&T retail store or through Apple.
To use iPhone, you must have the following:
Visit Apple online for complete information about activating your iPhone.
You have two options for using the internet with the iPhone.
If you are on the UIS campus you can join the UISGuest Wi-Fi network to access the internet. To access the internet using the UISGuest Wi-Fi network on campus from your iPhone network, do the following:
NOTE: If the UISGuest Wi-Fi network is not detected automatically then under Wi-Fi Networks you can tap on Other and then add a wireless network with the name UISGuest and with security of "None" and then join.
The UISGuest network will only allow you to access http websites on the internet. The uiswlan wireless network is not a viable option for internet connectivity at this time, because that wireless network requires a VPN connection to access services on private UIS addresses and the internet. At this time, the built in iPhone VPN client does not work with the Cisco VPN concentrator we use at UIS. ITS will keep the campus informed about updates from Apple which will expand our options for internet accessibility.
At this time, to read your UIS email on your iPhone, you must use the Safari web browser on your iPhone to access the webmail site http://webmail.uis.edu. We recommend that you use the wide screen mode to access the webmail site.
To switch to wide screen, turn your iPhone 90 degrees.
Zoom in to make the page easier to read. To zoom in, place two fingers together on the screen and move them apart. To zoom out, place two fingers apart and bring them together.
NOTE: The iPhone is not able to play Cisco Unity Messaging System [voice mail] VoiceMessage.wav files.
To sync your Outlook Calendar with the iPhone via iTunes, do the following:
If you did not store your password in Outlook, use the following steps to store your password on your iPhone:
Microsoft and Apple are currently working on making Microsoft Active Sync work on the iPhone. When a solution is devised, Active Sync will allow automatic push of email and calendar events to the iPhone.
If an application on your iPhone does not respond, you can force it to quit.
To force quit an application, hold down the Home button for six seconds. The iPhone will return to the Home screen.
If the above action does not work, the iPhone is "frozen." Research is underway on how to restart a frozen iPhone without loss of memory. UIS ITS will keep the campus informed about updates from Apple which will expand our options with the iPhone.
The following is a collection of resources that contain tips and widgets for your iPhone.
