the iphone hits uis

iPhone from AppleApple's iPhone has generated a great amount of interest on university campuses this summer. ITS at UIS is working hard to maximize the benefits of the iPhone for members of the UIS community who choose to use the iPhone. We will keep you updated as we address user interface issues and learn more about the utility of the iPhone.

Set forth below are instructions for obtaining an iPhone and for using the iPhone for internet, email, and calendaring. If there is an iPhone related feature that you would like ITS to address in more depth or an iPhone tool that you have found useful for teaching, working, or learning, please drop us a line at techsupport@uis.edu and let us know.

Purchasing an iPhone

iPhone units may only be purchased through an AT&T retail store or through Apple.

Requirements

To use iPhone, you must have the following:

  • iTunes 7.3 or later. Apple recommends using the latest version.
  • A Mac or a PC with a USB 2.0 port and one of the following operating systems: Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or later.
    • Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later.
    • Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition.

Visit Apple online for complete information about activating your iPhone.

Accessing the Internet with iPhone

You have two options for using the internet with the iPhone.

  1. One option is to use the wireless telephony EDGE data service that comes with your phone data plan.
  2. You can use the built in [802.11*] wireless adapter to join a Wi-Fi network such as the UISGuest network.

If you are on the UIS campus you can join the UISGuest Wi-Fi network to access the internet. To access the internet using the UISGuest Wi-Fi network on campus from your iPhone network, do the following:

  1. On the iPhone, press the Home button.
  2. Tap on Settings.
  3. Tap on Wi-Fi. Make sure Wi-Fi is ON. It should detect two wireless networks, uiswlan and UISGuest. You want to join to the UISGuest network.
  • If it fails to connect to the UISGuest network, tap on the uiswlan network then tap on "Forget this network" and then try again to join to the UISGuest network.

NOTE: If the UISGuest Wi-Fi network is not detected automatically then under Wi-Fi Networks you can tap on Other and then add a wireless network with the name UISGuest and with security of "None" and then join.

The UISGuest network will only allow you to access http websites on the internet. The uiswlan wireless network is not a viable option for internet connectivity at this time, because that wireless network requires a VPN connection to access services on private UIS addresses and the internet. At this time, the built in iPhone VPN client does not work with the Cisco VPN concentrator we use at UIS. ITS will keep the campus informed about updates from Apple which will expand our options for internet accessibility.

Using Your UIS Email with iPhone

At this time, to read your UIS email on your iPhone, you must use the Safari web browser on your iPhone to access the webmail site http://webmail.uis.edu. We recommend that you use the wide screen mode to access the webmail site.

To switch to wide screen, turn your iPhone 90 degrees.

Zoom in to make the page easier to read. To zoom in, place two fingers together on the screen and move them apart. To zoom out, place two fingers apart and bring them together.

NOTE: The iPhone is not able to play Cisco Unity Messaging System [voice mail] VoiceMessage.wav files.

Syncing Your Outlook Calendar with iPhone

To sync your Outlook Calendar with the iPhone via iTunes, do the following:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable cord and open iTunes.
  2. In iTunes, under Devices, select iPhone. [If your iPhone has been activated, iTunes will automatically display this view.]
  3. Click the Info tab.
  4. Click to select the check boxes for the items you want to synchronize. In the Calendar list, verify that Outlook is selected.
  5. In the lower right-hand corner of the iTunes window, click Sync. The selected information will sync with iPhone.

If you did not store your password in Outlook, use the following steps to store your password on your iPhone:

  1. On the iPhone, press the Home button.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Mail.
  4. Under Accounts, tap the desired account.
  5. Under Incoming Mail Server, tap Password. The keyboard is displayed and a cursor appears in the Password field.
  6. Type your password and tap return. Your password is saved.

Microsoft and Apple are currently working on making Microsoft Active Sync work on the iPhone. When a solution is devised, Active Sync will allow automatic push of email and calendar events to the iPhone.

Troubleshooting

If an application on your iPhone does not respond, you can force it to quit.

To force quit an application, hold down the Home button for six seconds. The iPhone will return to the Home screen.

If the above action does not work, the iPhone is "frozen." Research is underway on how to restart a frozen iPhone without loss of memory. UIS ITS will keep the campus informed about updates from Apple which will expand our options with the iPhone.
