Health Information and Health Insurance

For your protection and easy transition to UIS, please complete and have signed by your health care provider all required immunization and health records. Upon arrival at UIS, you are required to receive a tuberculosis screening test at the UIS Health Service; this test should not be done in your home country.

You will not be allowed to register for any class until you have had the tuberculosis test and other immunizations.

Major medical expenses are very costly and health insurance coverage is mandatory at UIS. However, student insurance will not cover the cost of eye examinations, glasses or dental work. It is therefore advisable that you obtain this health care at home, before your departure. Consider bringing an extra pair of eye glasses or contact lenses, and the original optometric prescription in case of damage or loss. Website: www.uis.edu/humanresources

F-1 Visa students: International students (12 semester hours - undergraduate; 9 semester hours - graduate) are eligible for UIS student group health insurance and an insurance fee will be assessed at registration. Family coverage, as well as maternity benefit coverage, may be purchased at additional cost.

J-1 Visa students: The U.S. information Agency (USIA) requires that all persons in J status have adequate health insurance while in United States. Mandatory minimum coverage shall provide: medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness; repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500; expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his/her home country in the amount of $10,000; and a deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.

UIS student group health insurance does not meet all USIA requirements and J Visa students are required to purchase individual health coverage policies; information and application forms are available in the Office of International Student Services.

Traveling to UIS

US Governmental Update:

Click : Re-entry for F1-students or look PDF

Destination: Springfield, Illinois, U.S.A.
We do not go to St Louis or Chicago to pick up students.

PLEASE NOTIFY THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES, (217) 206-6678, OR BY E-MAIL iss@uis.edu OF YOUR ARRIVAL DATE AND TIME.

There are many ways to reach Springfield using public transportation: plane, train or bus. (Do not take a taxicab from Chicago or St. Louis; it will cost several hundred dollars.)

Plan your arrival time in Chicago or St. Louis for morning or early afternoon so that you can reach Springfield while most University offices are open. Our campus is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you arrive over the weekend, be sure to contact us ahead of time or we may not be able to meet you.

The following information should assist you in making your travel plans.

Flying

If you are flying into the USA, you will have to clear US customs at your initial port of entry. Once that has been taken care of you will need to proceed, with your baggage, to the domestic airline that you will be using to fly into Springfield. It is possible to fly directly into Springfield from a number of airports in the USA, including Chicago and St. Louis. Depending on your initial port of entry, you may need to change flights in order to reach Springfield.

If you fly into John F. Kennedy airport in New York you may need to transfer to La Guardia airport to catch your domestic flight. You should go to the Ground Transportation information station and ask for assistance in arranging for a shuttle or a taxi.

Information on flights into Abraham Lincoln Capitol Airport in Springfield can be found at www.flyspi.com or by calling (217) 788-1060.

Capitol Airport is on the north side of Springfield and is about 15 miles from UIS campus. With advance notification (call (217) 206-6678) someone from UIS can meet you at the airport. A taxi ride to the campus will cost about $25.

Train

Springfield has an Amtrak train station and is served by trains from Chicago and St. Louis daily.

In order to travel from Chicago to Springfield by Amtrak train, after clearing customs and getting luggage, go to the Ground transportation information station in the terminal and inquire about the Chicago Transit Bus to the Amtrak station. The bus will cost only a few dollars. A taxicab to downtown will cost about $40.
