Visa Information

Students arriving from outside the United States:

Please do not remove any documents from the envelope given to you by the U.S. Consulate which issues your entry visa; the entire contents must be presented to the U.S. Immigration inspector at the port of entry. You are required by law to attend the educational institution whose I-20 you use to enter the United States for at least one semester.

Students transferring from another institution within the United States:

F-1 Visa Students

1.Obtain certification from the last school attended verifying term of last registration and full-time enrollment (transcript or letter from international student adviser), or Employment Authorization Document (EAD) based on practical training.

2.Bring this certification and UIS I-20 to Office of International Student Services within 15 days of beginning attendance at UIS for school transfer processing with U.S. Immigration Services.

J-1 Visa Students

You must request permission from your current J-1 program sponsor, and in some instances, from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to transfer from one exchange visitor program to another; this transfer request must be completed before enrolling at UIS. Employment is not permitted at UIS until the transfer has been approved. Keep a photocopy for your records of all documents submitted to USCIS regarding your transfer request. If your previous school submits the application to USCIS on your behalf, request a letter from the school verifying that the application was sent.

Please send all transfer documents to USCIS by certified mail, return receipt requested. You may use our office address as your mailing address on your transfer application.

On-campus housing space is assigned based on the date that your application and deposit are received. Since there is not enough space to house all students who wish to live on campus, you must apply as soon as possible. If you do not apply before you arrive, there is no promise that on-campus housing will be available for you.

Information regarding off-campus rooms and apartments is kept in the Housing Office. Individual students must arrange their own accommodations with local apartment owners, although the Housing Office will try to assist you.
