- SPRINGFIELD – Martha I. Lorton, 85, of Springfield died on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, in Springfield.She was born the daughter of Dwight I. and Lucy M. Ashford Lorton in Greene County in Greenfield on Aug. 2, 1923.Miss Lorton graduated from Greenfield Community High School in 1941, Hardin Brown Business College in Jacksonville and Western Union Telegraph Company Commercial School in Crawfordsville, Ind. She began her career in the Jacksonville Western Union office as a teleprinter operator from 1942 until 1968, when she became manager. When the Jacksonville office closed in 1971, she transferred to the Western Union office in Springfield. In 1974, she was transferred as permit manager at the Illinois Department of Transportation with Western Union and in 1979 back to the main office as manager until her retirement in 1982, ending a 40-year career.
She was a life member of Alpha Iota Honorary Business Sorority, active in Springfield Christian Women’s Connection and Friendship Bible Coffee studies. Martha was emeritus board member at Washington Street Mission, serving as secretary for many years and also a volunteer ombudsman for Illinois Department of Aging. She was host family coordinator for international students at the University of Illinois at Springfield for more than 15 years. She was an active member of Hope Evangelical Free Church, serving as greeters’ team leader since 1992. She was a former member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Wrights and First Baptist Church of Jacksonville.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Glenn, Lynn, Allen and Harvey Lorton. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Lorton) Piper of Palmyra. Also surviving are 16 nieces and nephews and a number of great and great-great nieces and nephews.
The services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Road, where the family will meet friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. The funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at Hope Evangelical Free Church, 3000 Lenhart Road, with Blake Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Wrights.
