Extending our vision beyond the boundaries of Springfield and Illinois

about the Office

About the OfficeInternational Programs encompasses four distinct areas: Study Abroad; English as a Second Language; support for international faculty and staff including visa and permanent resident applications; and working with faculty, departments and colleges on international initiatives.

  • We offer many study abroad opportunities which include: short-term study programs such as our long standing exchange program in Ashikaga, Japan and our new program in Northern Ireland; full semester and year-long exchange programs in Australia, Japan, England, China and Mexico (with more in the works); and a means to take advantage of the 3000 plus study abroad programs offered by other universities and program providers. We can help you study almost anywhere!
  • Our English as a Second Language (ESL) Department offers an intensive summer program and a series of courses during the academic year. Courses and programs are designed for people whose first language is not English. We work with international and domestic students. Students do not need to be enrolled at UIS to take advantage of our programs. We also work with universities and institutions outside of the USA to develop short-term English language and culture programs.
  • We provide support for visiting and permanent international faculty and staff. This includes applying for H1, J1 and O1 visas and for permanent residency. We also assist visiting scholars with arranging for housing and for accessing campus services.
  • International Programs has also been involved with a variety of international initiatives that have included international on-line education, such as our on-line exchange program in Political Science with the University of Colima in Mexico, collaborative efforts with universities located outside the USA and the development of multi/dual degree programs. Working with the Global Experience Committee, a subcommittee of the International Studies Committee, we review all affiliation agreements between UIS and universities and institutions located outside of the USA and provide preliminary approval where appropriate.
