Who are UIS students?

UIS is known for its small classes and outstanding teaching. Professors and students get to know each other, and students have the opportunity to design individualized academic experiences that meet their unique educational interests and goals.

We have about 4500 undergraduate and graduate students, of which over 400 are international or non-native speakers of English from around the world including India, Korea, Japan, China, Columbia, Senegal, Chile and Turkey. Many of our students come from Illinois. Because of the large percentage of American students, international students have a wonderful opportunity to experience American culture and practice English skills. UIS prides itself on collaboration, so students will have the opportunity to get to know each other outside of class, but will also work together in class.

We have four colleges within UIS – Business and Management, Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts and Sciences and Public Affairs and Administration.

UIS offers 42 degree-granting programs. Courses are offered during the day, in the evenings and on weekends, as well as online. Wireless campus, "smart classrooms", the Norris L Brookens Library, PC and Mac computer labs, television studio, media services, web and email accounts to all registered students without charge.

International students may have some unique challenges while at the University. The Offices of International Student Services, International Programs, and English as a Second Language are here to help.

  • The Office of International Student Services is responsible for advising all international students. They will help you find essential information about visas, immigration, arrival and other legal and logistical matters. The Office of International Student Services also hosts an orientation for incoming students. This is a fun and informative way to get to know each other, our staff, and the school.
  • The Office of International Programs coordinates study abroad opportunities and the development of international exchange and study programs and promotes globalization and diversity on campus. The ESL department is part of the Office of International Programs and is here to help with any language and culture questions you have.

What's going on at UIS?

There's always something happening at UIS. There are over 50 student organizations with interests ranging from sports to food to religion. Involvement in campus organizations is an important part of your complete educational experience at UIS. Student organizations offer social, service, and professional opportunities for their members within the university and community. Membership can broaden acquaintances, develop leadership ability, build decision-making and problem-solving skills, and complement classroom instruction. See for yourself by clicking here

In addition to joining student organizations, students can attend weekly lectures from visiting scholars, stroll through the Visual Arts Gallery, check out the latest independent and foreign films, see a production in our Studio Theatre, or be entertained by an off Broadway play or popular musician at the Sangamon Auditorium. All of these events are on campus. Off campus, students can discover the city of Springfield by touring the capital where our state government works, exploring the many President Abraham Lincoln sites, wandering through the famous Dana-Thomas House built by world-renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, and hiking in one of several regional state parks.

Conversation Partner Program

The Conversation Partner Program brings non-native English speakers together with native English speakers. The primary goal of the program is for non-native English speakers to use English more naturally in everyday situations and learn more about American culture. A secondary goal is to foster global citizenship, tolerance, and friendship for all participants.

The ESL Program partners students according to their schedule and, if possible, by shared interests. Students then decide on one hour a week to get together, on or off campus, to have open discussion. This allows students to practice English in a relaxed setting, gain fluency in conversation, and improve knowledge of idioms and slang. The ESL Program provides suggestions for topics and venues, but ultimately it's up to the students to decide where to run with this program.

Anyone who is interested in encouraged to email Dana Atwell at esl@uis.edu.

Krishna - Graduate Student, Computer Science - I heard that the Computer Science department is good in UIS. The coursework and funding opportunities attract the students to choose UIS. Campus housing is the best part here. We lead a luxurious life at a decent price on campus. I’m a member of the Indian Student Organization and like to participate in community events.

Min - Undergraduate Student - I decided to come here because UIS is a small college. I knew UIS would give me a new life. I like meeting new students at UIS because they are very nice. The ESL classes have helped my writing, grammar, and speaking skills.
Naho - Graduate Student, Legal Studies - The Master’s Program in Legal Studies is a rare program in the US. I really like the program, professors, and friends. Outside of class, I’ve participated in the Women’s Issues Caucus and the Downstate Innocence Project. Living on campus is very good. I’ve made many friends through roommates. Also, I don’t need a car for living on campus. ESL classes help me get used to a new life in the U.S. Also, my ESL teacher was my writing tutor at the same time.
Rahyeong - Graduate Student, Political Studies - I was about to go to the U.S. to learn English only for one year; however, my sister and brother, who had experiences to go abroad and study English, told me that I should study in graduate school while studying English at the same time. UIS was attractive because of its proper tuition fee and its respectable faculty. I love the education system here and learning American culture as well as English.

Where to live?

Students may choose to live on or off campus. Individual students and student families who choose to live on campus are housed in 198 modern apartment-style units. One-, two-, and four-bedroom furnished and unfurnished apartments are available with rates ranging from $815.00 to $2,998 per semester (summer semester rates are less). Lincoln Residence Hall provides housing for 226 first and second year Capital Scholar Students.

By visiting Housing & Residential Life, you can take a virtual tour of the housing options, see photos from residence hall events, and check out current rates.

What to eat?

UIS Dining Services offers a variety of delicious, healthy and affordable food around campus. They have something for everyone – there is a fresh salad bar, several hot meal options including vegetarian plates, and a grill. Of course, you can grab college staples like pizza, sandwiches and ice cream.

They offer several meal plans, though only freshman who live on campus are required to buy one. You can also purchase food on an individual basis.

In addition to cafeterias, we have coffee shops around campus. Here you can order specialty coffees, teas, or smoothies while relaxing with friends.
