Prerequisites

You do not need to be admitted to UIS to take advantage of either the academic year or summer programs. Undergraduate, graduate, international and domestic non-native speakers of English are encouraged to apply.

Students who wish to enroll at UIS for undergraduate or graduate studies must meet the requirements of the University. Applicants applying from abroad whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL scores. Undergraduate applicants must have a total score of not less than 500 on the Paper Based Test (173 CTB, 61 iBT). Graduate applicants must have a total score of not less than 550 on the Paper Based Test (213 CTB, 79-80 iBT, 213 CBT). Some graduate programs may have higher TOEFL entrance requirements.

Students who wish to attend classes but not enroll as degree seeking students are not bound by the language proficiency requirements. To take full advantage of the ESL programs, we suggest a minimum TOEFL score of 450 PBT (133 CBT, 45 iBT).

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants applying from abroad whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL scores. A total score of not less than 500 on the Paper Based Test (61 iBT, 173 CTB) will fulfill the English proficiency requirement for undergraduate admission.

A total score of 550 on the Paper Based Test (79-80 iBT, 213 CBT) will fulfill the English proficiency requirement for graduate admission. Some programs may have higher TOEFL entrance requirements. Please see the specific department you are interested in to be sure you meet their requirements.

For international students applying from abroad, the deadlines for completing files are: June 1 for autumn terms; November 1 for spring terms; and April 1 for summer sessions.

To participate in ISPEL, students must apply by May 1, 2008. After we receive the application, we will begin to work on a student visa, and send a letter of admission to the student. A deposit for ISPEL is due upon receipt of the admission letter.
