Guardians Campaign

Guard·Ÿi·Ÿan (n.)

“One who looks after, protects, defends or preserves”

Illinois Innocence Project (IIP) Guardians are a group of major donors who believe in the American legal system and are committed to getting it right. They join in the goals of law enforcers and prosecutors in the pursuit of a just, and therefore correct, result to keep our citizens safe and secure. Towards those ends, they support the work of the Illinois Innocence Project and want to ensure its future.

  • IIP Guardians simply do not accept the notion that the imprisonment of innocent people is an unavoidable byproduct of a complex legal system.
  • IIP Guardians believe it is important that the system “get it right” in arrests and conviction.
  • IIP Guardians support crime victims by helping uncover the truth about the crimes perpetrated against them.
  • IIP Guardians support the innocent victims of a system who are incarcerated for crimes they did not commit.

Small by comparison in the national Innocence Network and unique in its location within a largely undergraduate university, IIP has helped to secure the release of six innocent people, in the process, saving the citizens of Illinois millions of dollars.

IIP receives hundreds of requests for help each year. Most are rejected because they do not meet the Project’s strict review standards for determining actual innocence.

This work takes time, dogged commitment and significant resources.

We will soon be announcing the establishment of an ongoing Guardians campaign beginning with the recognition of the Founding Guardians. A group of IIP supporters has already pledged their support as Founding Guardians with pledges across all participation options including two at the Platinum Level.

Please help us free innocent people and prevent others who are innocent from going to prison by becoming an Illinois Innocence Project Founding Guardian!
