Wireless Networking at UIS

ITS has recently completed an upgrade of all wireless access points on campus to the latest 802.11n standard. This upgrade provides greater speed, reliability and security to all wireless users on campus. Wireless is provided in all campus buildings and many outdoor areas by over 300 access points. ITS continues to monitor and improve wireless on campus and will be installing additional access points in areas with poor signal.

The wireless network operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. These are unlicensed bands where the likelihood of interference between devices is quite high. For this reason only equipment installed by ITS is allowed. This means that personal wireless access points and 2.4 GHz cordless phones are prohibited. Most wireless enabled devices (laptops, cell phones, iPad, etc.) are supported and are able to connect to the wireless network.

Wireless networking is inherently less secure than wired networking. Wireless data can be intercepted by any other device within range of the transmitting device. In order to protect important University information and user information, such as user names and passwords, UIS has implemented a secure network called UISWiFi.

UISWiFi is available to anyone that has a valid UIS Network ID. It provides network access to computers, laptops, and WPA2 Enterprise compatible PDAs and phones. At this time most gaming consoles including the Nintendo DS, Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 do not support WPA2 Enterprise and are unable to connect to UISWiFi.

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions. You can find out more about the eduroam project by visiting their web page at http://www.eduroam.org.

University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff traveling in the U.S. or abroad for conferences and collaborative work can have their laptops and other wireless devices configured locally before they leave. That way, wireless access at any other eduroam-affiliated institution will be automatic and will not require extra configuration.

Wireless Access for Guests

ITS operates a wireless service for guests of UIS. The network is named UISGuest and is available in all campus locations, excluding housing. The UISGuest network is an unsecured wireless network. To request a temporary guest account please contact the ITS Client Services Center.

Access for UIS Housing Residents that are not affiliated with UIS

If you are a UIS Housing resident but not a UIS employee or student you can obtain access to the wireless network via this method:

  1. Contact your Residential Director or the housing office to obtain a wireless request form
  2. Read and agree to the Network Acceptable Use Policy
  3. Sign the form and return it to the housing office
  4. Once the form is approved by housing and brought to the theĀ ITS Client Services Center a wireless access account will be created for you
