Black & White Photography

FlowerKirstin Pellizzaro
These four pictures were part of my final project in Intro to Photography. The course teaches you the basics of photography through 55mm black and white film. You are given different assignments throughout the courses, and for your final project you pick your top 20. It is a very fun, interesting class that I think anyone can enjoy. The photos shown are my favorite four.

Does Size Matter?

Does Size Matter?Kirstin Pellizzaro
I made this very short film for my Documentary class. This course is interesting and can be a lot of fun, but it involves a lot of work. You come up with the topic, you shoot, and edit all by your self; so make sure you take Basic Video Production and Field Production before this. You also get to watch a lot of interesting documentaries in the class.

Steganography

I have noticed that when it comes to securing confidential information, the norm of the day is to encrypt data with strongest available encryption standard/code. Computers are becoming more powerful than ever, and processing speeds are multiplying quickly. Theoretically most encryption standards are penetrable. Therefore, alternate approaches for securing data become critical. One such alternative I have used is: To hide the existence of data itself.

jump for joel

jump for joelShana Renae Stine
Jump for Joel [J4J] is a project I started for an orphanage in Kenya, Africa. I was able to use Project AST 301 to earn acadecmic credit while organizing J4J. One of my learning objectives for the course was to learn how to better market our cause. This website, created by UIS alum - Dan Collins, is one of the means we use to promote J4J. It includes links to videos, podcast episodes, and social-networking sites, all of which help us to get the word out about Jump for Joel!

ITS Website on iPhone

Vidhisha Nandhikonda - iPhone Project

Vidhisha Nandhikonda
I developed a website, for the Information Technology Services department, to be displayed on an Apple iPhone. The website was developed using HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, and JavaScript. By sizing the webpages, I was able to properly scale the pages, which allows the user to perform rotate and zoom functions within Safari.

E-Scrap: Generation Rates and Effects

E-Scrap Presentation

Krishna Kakarlapudi
I worked on this project to showcase on Technology Day at UIS. E-Scrap is the fastest growing scrap on earth. The facts about E-Scrap motivated me to conduct research. In this presentation there are details about:

  • What is E-scrap?
  • E-scrap generation rates and effects
  • What can we do about E-Scrap?

We generate E-Scrap and hence we are responsible for its effects. Therefore, we have to take on the responsibility to control the production of E-Scarp.

Hemingway's Paris: A Moveable Feast

Google Map Preview

Nikki Swanson, a student in the Teacher Education Program, created a digital image project using Google Maps for use in her future high school French and English class. Entitled ‘Hemingway's Paris: A Moveable Feast’, the map locates some of the most notable real-life places in Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast and arranges them on a map so that students may have a spatial and visual idea of what Hemingway saw during his time in Paris.

This experience would provide students an opportunity to learn about the time and place in which some of the greatest Modernist writers lived and worked. It allows students a tangible perspective for places and eras that are otherwise— to use a word from A Moveable Feast that Gertrude Stein used to describe some of Hemingway’s works— “unaccroachable”.

Hitchcock Film Class

Rear Window Screen ShotKatie Luchtefeld
In my Hitchcock film class, we studied Rear Window. For my final project, I argue that the way the main character Jeff views his neighbors and friends, from out of his window, is very similar to the voyeurism on Facebook. Additionally, this voyeurism is twofold: Jeff both performs for his neighbors and friends a version of himself, and in turn they are also performing. Likewise, while on Facebook, users perform an idealized "online" self. In order to illustrate the marriage of these two ideas, I created Facebook profiles for all major characters. Then I played the whole movie out through pictures, status messages and comments. By using Camtasia, I was able to record the whole process through screen capture. Once I had recorded all the Facebook sessions, I used Camtasia Rely to mesh them together into one continuous video. I also added sound to make the video less monotonous. The end result is a 10 minute video that details all the main action of the film. Enjoy!
