Data Center Upgrades

As part of our ongoing efforts to provide a stable and robust infrastructure for the campus, ITS in cooperation with Facilities and Services implemented major upgrades in our primary data center in HSB. These upgrades provide the UIS campus community with redundant uninterrupted power in the event of a utility failure.

Students were given an opportunity to tour the newly remodeled data center during Welcome Week.

Lecture Capture Has Never Been Easier

CaptureSpaceDuring the summer semester, ITS debuted a new resource to the campus for recording lectures and screencaptures. CaptureSpace Lite includes many additional features beyond what TechSmith Relay has available, including the ability to:

  • Record sections of your screen (not the entire screen)
  • Trim videos at any point in the recording
  • Trim videos after the recording has been published
  • Add captions
  • Upload attachments
  • Add chapters (making it easier for the viewer to skip to specific topics)
  • Add a title slide at the beginning and credits at the end

ITS Welcomes New Team Members

ITS welcomed Jay Shied and Casey Calhoun to our Learning Spaces Support team this summer. Jay comes to UIS with a rich background in the audio-visual field – including video conferencing, streaming audio, touch screens, digital signage, and PA systems. Casey transitioned to the Learning Spaces Support team, where we are thrilled to leverage his 16+ years of experience supporting and collaborating with faculty. Casey is located in UHB 2026B.

Additionally, Randy Southard transitioned to our Network Services team and has already been instrumental in supporting the 300+ virtual and physical servers that provide services to UIS as well as over 15,000 mailboxes.

ITS Campus Collaborations: Supporting Teaching and Learning Efforts

Exciting things are happening at UIS, and ITS is proud to be partnering with several departments to enhance the teaching and learning process.

In response to faculty feedback regarding classroom technologies, ITS has been busy over the summer implementing several enhancements to our classrooms:

  • Many faculty have expressed concerns regarding the quality of the projectors in our classrooms and labs. ITS is currently in the midst of replacing 66 projectors campus wide. The new projectors not only provide a clear, crisp image but also include the ability to wirelessly project from Android and Windows devices.
  • For faculty interested in taking attendance in on-campus courses, ITS has developed a web-based application. Check out the Attendance Taking webpage for more information, including step-by-step instructions and a video tutorial!

 

 

  • While we strive to ensure classroom technology is working smoothly, when there are issues, ITS wants to make it easy for faculty to report concerns. You will now see a Report Issues shortcut on the desktop of the instructor station in each classroom/lab. Simply double-click that icon to report any issues or concerns you may have. We will follow up with you to address them.

 

  • ITS is debuting a new classroom technology control system in BRK 411, PAC 3F, and UHB 2001 this fall. The new system replaces the remotes typically used to project content and resembles the touch panels in the UHB classrooms. It lets you control what is projected – the instructor computer, a laptop, DVD/VCR, etc – with a single touch. We plan to continue introducing these new systems campus-wide.

 

Additionally, ITS has joined the Illinois Campus Cluster Program providing a high performance computing environment to our faculty working on big data research projects.  This is an exciting opportunity for faculty to take advantage of the cluster for processing large data requests and calculations for their research. Where Is My Help?

ITS is committed to providing timely responses to each and every person who contacts us for assistance. Some issues may require follow up at a later time. Did you know that you can log in to our Service Desk application to see the status of your support ticket? You can see which ITS staff member has been assigned to the ticket, add a comment/additional details, or re-open a closed ticket if you have a reoccurring issue. Just go to http://support.uillinois.edu and log in with your NetID and password.

Data Security Efforts

Based on recommendations from a recent IT audit, ITS will be implementing two new features to improve our efforts in keeping systems and data secure. Later in the semester, you will notice that computers in classrooms and labs will include a log-in banner reminding all users of the Acceptable Use Policy and that use of University-owned resources implies acceptance of the policy.

Additionally, ITS will begin locking accounts after a series of failed password attempts. This will prevent robots from hacking our passwords. After 8 failed attempts at entering a password in a 30-minute timeframe, the account will be locked for 5 minutes. Users may call the ITS Client Services to get their account unlocked before the 5 minutes passes.

ITS encourages everyone to be aware of simple actions we can all do to protect our data and keep our systems running smoothly and efficiently. This includes restarting your workstation once a week or so, which allows your computer to finish installing critical updates to the operating system. We also encourage you to take advantage of cloud storage options, such as Box, Google Drive, or OneDrive, to store your files safely and securely.

Blackboard Statistics

Blackboard is UIS’ course management system, allowing faculty and students to share content and course resources in a web-based format, available 24/7.
