TITLE:  ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

STARTING DATE:  August 16, 2012

DESCRIPTION:  Environmental Studies, an interdisciplinary department in the College of Public Affairs and Administration, seeks applications at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level with expertise in sustainable development.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in sustainable development (broadly defined), environmental studies, or a related discipline.  We require one or both of the positions to teach one or more times a year Environmental Social Sciences and Humanities, Sustainable Development, Introduction to Sustainability, and Environmental Ethics.  Preference will be given to candidates that can teach elective courses including, but not limited to, Environmental Education, Environmental Justice, Global Change in Local Places, Environmental Economics, Sustainable Food Systems, Environmental Sociology, Literature and the Environment, Environmental Issues and the Press, Writing and the Environment, and/or courses in candidates’ areas of expertise.  Teaching load (three courses per spring and fall semester) will consist of a combination of on-campus and online courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Summer teaching is not required, but can be done.  These positions will also perform academic advising, direct graduate research, and conduct research in her/his specialization.

At UIS there are immediate opportunities, and expectations, to develop a service portfolio at the department, college, and campus levels.  Research opportunities exist not only through collaboration with other Environmental Studies faculty, but with active peers in other departments that share interests in sustainability issues, as well as with the resources afforded UIS due to our position in the state capital.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:  We currently have four full-time faculty members and approximately 100 graduate students.  The Department offers an M.S. in Environmental Science and an M.A. in Environmental Studies with three concentrations:  Environmental Planning and Management, Environmental Humanities, and Sustainable Development and Policy.  Students may also pursue the Sustainable Development and Policy concentration entirely online.  Undergraduates at UIS can earn a minor in Environmental Studies, or take our courses as part of their general education requirements.  Beginning in Fall 2012, the Department will offer a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems.        

CAMPUS: Located in the state capital, the University of Illinois Springfield is one of three campuses of the University of Illinois. The UIS campus serves approximately 5,000 students in 23 undergraduate and 21 graduate degree programs.
