TITLE:  Assistant Professor, Music

DESIRED START DATE: August 16, 2012

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Full-time, nine-month tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank. The primary function of this position is to develop and implement undergraduate music courses in the Music Program and in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education curriculum.  Responsibilities: teach courses in music history, world music, and areas of specialization in music and in the interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum; maintain an active record of scholarship; participate in professional and university service activities; advise undergraduate music minors; participate in development and administration of music curriculum.  The candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching undergraduates and have the ability to relate to a diverse student body with varying levels of skill.  A doctorate is required in music, musicology, ethnomusicology, education, fine arts, or related field by date of appointment.  Area of specialization must be complementary to needs and department strengths.  Candidate must have breadth of training needed to offer a diverse range of courses including music history and world music. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates with evidence of successful undergraduate teaching, skills and willingness to coach or direct a musical ensemble, a demonstrated history of active involvement in music as a performer, director, board member, arts manager, recording engineer, or other active role in music performance; experience with MIDI tools, digital audio software, and music writing software; and/or a willingness to teach in the university’s online curriculum are encouraged to apply.  Applicants will be asked to articulate how their knowledge and experience have prepared them to support the UIS College of Liberal Arts and Sciences goal of teaching “students how to participate effectively in an interdependent, diverse, and rapidly changing world, offering education in a transformative environment that stimulates engagement with ideas, each other, and the globe.”
