POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Visual Arts Department at the University of Illinois Springfield invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track instructor position to teach Foundation classes in studio art and serve as Gallery Director. This is a renewable position with a 4/4 load. Instructor would be expected to teach 3 courses per term in two-dimensional studio art, including introductory classes such as drawing and 2-D design. There is the possibility of teaching upper-level studio art classes and introductory art history classes. In lieu of teaching a fourth class each term, the successful candidate would serve as Director for the university’s Visual Arts Gallery, which maintains an active schedule of three-four exhibitions a term. The candidate would oversee all gallery operations and be responsible for supervising the Gallery Manager, who is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the space. Other duties include participation in standard departmental service. Applicants must have an M.F.A. in 2-D studio art by Fall, 2012, and must have knowledge of contemporary studio foundation instruction. Candidate must demonstrate ability to teach drawing, painting, and 2-D design. In addition, candidate must have some experience working at a visual arts gallery or similar institution. Ability to teach printmaking and art history is desirable, but not required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching at the college/university level beyond assistantship.
