Necessary Steps Mentoring Program

Designed to help first-generation college students adapt to the university environment.

Participants residing on the Necessary Steps Floor will be part of the Necessary Steps Mentoring Program. The program is designed to help transition first-generation students to university life at UIS.  This program is targeted at First-Generation College students that are defined as students whose parents have not graduated from a four-year college or institution.  We want to make sure that our students feel comfortable and that Mentors lend a helping hand to an easier transition.  The Mentors will help the Necessary Steps students identify and overcome problems they may face throughout their first year in college.

The Necessary Steps students will be able to take full advantage of the career exploration and developmental opportunities the Program Coordinator and Mentors offer.  The guidance of a Mentor will help students to become more focused in their career goals, and to develop skills they will need as they begin their first year experience as a college student.  The Necessary Steps Mentoring Program exists to enhance student’ skills and abilities in and outside the classroom.
