Housing Information
Apartments and Townhouses
"Flexible" is the best word to describe UIS' modern, on-campus facilities. Both single students and student families are housed in apartments and townhouses located on campus. Current facilities include 12 one-bedroom, 41 two-bedroom, 56 four-bedroom flats, and 72 four-bedroom Townhouses.
All single students are housed in furnished apartments, where they share common areas with their roommates. Both private and shared bedroom assignments are available. Rental costs vary according to the type of accommodation and the level of privacy afforded. The wide variety of living options and range of housing costs allow students to obtain the accommodations which best meet their personal and financial requirements. We recommend students apply early as many of our spaces are in high demand.
Students who will be living with their legal spouse and/or legally dependent children are eligible to apply for family housing. UIS maintains a limited number of one- and two-bedroom apartments for family housing, and may offer furnished or unfurnished accommodations. Child care is available on campus for toddlers and children from 18 months to 12 years of age, and school buses transport children from campus to the local public schools.
Every apartment includes a stove, frost-free refrigerator, draperies, smoke detector, and central air conditioning and heating. Furnished apartments also include a sofa, living room chairs, dining room set, desks, beds, and dressers. A coin-operated laundry facility, exclusively for resident use, is located in each complex. Residents with vehicles are required to purchase both a UIS parking decal and UIS Housing decal. UIS policy prohibits pets, except for tropical fish and, with prior approval of the Housing Office, animals that aid residents with disabilities. Waterbeds, Spas, and Halogen Lamps are also prohibited in campus apartments.
Lincoln Residence Hall
The housing needs of Capital Scholar students are ideally met by the design of this residence hall. The building is three stories high with two student housing wings on each floor. Students live in four person clusters. A cluster consists of two double rooms with a shared semi private bath. Each double room is provided with flexible furniture that can be configured with two beds, two desks, and two dressers. The furniture can be stacked as bunk beds or with beds above desks. Each room is provided with a single telephone and cable TV outlet, and each student is also provided with two duplex outlets and a data outlet. Each wing is provided with a lounge and a laundry facility and is served by a Resident Assistant in this 226-person residence hall.
Off-campus housing
The Housing Office also maintains information regarding off-campus housing opportunities in the Springfield area. The nearest off-campus housing is approximately two miles from campus, making personal transportation a virtual necessity when seeking off-campus accommodations. Link to Off campus Housing!
Telephone
On-Campus and local calling services are provided as part of the housing contract. Residents must however provide their own telephone set. Long distance and local toll calls may be made using long distance calling cards.
Townhouse residents experience the latest cutting-edge technology with their Voice over IP phones. Voicemail goes straight to your UIS email inbox, where you can listen from any computer with internet access and speakers. Your IP phone has many features, such as the ability to have your phone read your email to you. For more information on the VoIP phones, contact UIS Tech Support at 206-7357.
Electricity
Electric charges are included in room and apartment rates, and the electricity is on when you move in. We expect residents to be efficient in their usage of electricity, and to be mindful of the resources available to them.

Transportation
Cars: A parking decal must be purchased at the Office of the Bursar to legally park in the UIS parking lots. The fee is $48 for a full year or $24 for one semester. In addition to the UIS parking decal, each housing resident must display a UIS Housing decal on their vehicle. A decal is assigned at move-in, and is dependent on the location of the resident (LRH, Apartments, Townhouses). The cost of the Housing decal is $5.
Bus: The Springfield Mass Transit District provides bus service between downtown (Seventh and Capitol), the main campus, housing, and Lincoln Land Community College. The bus leaves from campus 10 minutes before the hour on a regular schedule from 7:50 a.m. until 3:50 p.m. The final bus leaves for downtown from UIS at 5:13 p.m. Springfield Mass Transit District runs Saturday morning service hourly from 7:50 a.m. until 12:50 p.m.
Network connections
Data connections are available in all units, which will allow residents to directly connect to the campus computer network and the Internet. These data connections are made available to aid and enhance residents' educational experience by learning to use a broad variety of online resources and tools.
In addition to the wired data connections, the UIS campus has wireless internet access available in all academic and administrative buildings, all student apartments and residence halls, in recreational facilities, and in outdoor "gathering spots". For more information on the wireless network, click here.
Residents are responsible for providing their own compatible computers. PC's must have at least 16 MB RAM and a 486 or higher processor running Windows 95 NT or better. Mac users must be running at least Mac OS 7. In addition, residents are responsible for having a "10 base T" Ethernet card installed in their computers, and for ensuring they have a proper data connection cable(RJ45).
Cable Television
The living room and all bedrooms in each apartment are wired for cable television. The University has embarked on its own 72-channel, satellite-based cable system. This system provides a diverse channel lineup featuring ten foreign-language based channels (German, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, South Asian, and Arabic); 3 HBO's, Disney, sports packages, etc. Residents will no longer be able to contract directly with Insight Communications, the former cable provider. Additional "premium" channels and digital box upgrades are not available on the new system at this time.
Child care
UIS Cox Children's Center operates child care primarily for students with infants, toddlers, and children between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 years. The Infant Room is the newest addition, serving children ages 6 weeks to 15 months. Contact Daycare and reserve an appointment. For additional information, browse Cox Center Website, or contact the director at (217) 206-6610. The center hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Evening care is also available.
