Our Students

Students in the UIS History Program are as diverse as the subjects they study and come to us from all backgrounds, cultures, and philosophies. While many of our students enter the program as traditional, four-year degree-seeking students, we also have a large number of individuals who come back to school after years or decades of experience in life outside the classroom. In addition, the great majority of our students study history out of personal fascination rather than a desire to land a high-income career.

A typical lively discussion among History studentsAs a result, classes can get pretty lively: take students from all walks of life who share similar passions, but not necessarily similar beliefs, add classroom discussion of a debatable historical subject, and voila—intellectual sparring matches! If you think you’re up to this challenge, it’s time you became a History student.
