Chapin Award for Student Research

The Department of History is pleased to offer Chapin Scholarships to assist qualified students conducting archival and other primary source research.  The scholarships are designed to help meritorious graduate and undergraduate students in the History honors program with expenses such as travel, lodging, copying, archive and library fees, purchasing research materials, and other costs directly related to significant research based on primary source materials.   Applications are due Friday, December 5th, 2014 and recipients will be notified soon after. As a condition of acceptance, recipients of the award will present findings from their research at a departmental awards reception the following spring. The awards are made possible by a generous growing endowment from Nancy Lanphier and Charles Armstrong Chapin.

Application process

The Chapin Award committee invites applications and nominations for this year’s Chapin History Award. Applicants must be History graduate students or advanced undergraduate History majors with an ambitious project that will require traveling for research with primary source material. Complete applications should include:

  1. A current curriculum vitae
  2. A project description, including what benefit the applicant expects to derive from the award. Applicants should also ideally have obtained permission from the archives and/or libraries they wish to visit in order to work there during the period covered by the award.
  3. A detailed budget
  4. An official transcript
  5. Two confidential letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the committee.

The deadline for the receipt of complete applications is Friday, December 5th, 2014.

The materials can be sent by regular mail or be submitted to Julie Atwell in the History department office (UHB 3050). Any questions should be directed to Dr. Elizabeth Kosmetatou.

The materials should be addressed to:
