Master’s Degree – Application Requirements
The Master of Arts in History emphasizes public history, blending courses in methods and applications with the study of periods, regions, and themes. The program is designed to provide all students with the critical and analytical abilities and intellectual breadth required for the study of history at the graduate level.
It serves students with a variety of goals, including those seeking employment in historical agencies or societies, museums or archives; those interested in becoming teachers or enhancing their teaching credentials; those pursuing careers in public service, community organizations, business or labor; those interested in advanced study in history or other fields; and those desiring the intellectual stimulation of a challenging discipline.
In addition to completing the UIS application for graduate study, applicants are expected to submit a writing sample. Applicants may submit one or more of the following: GRE General test scores, reference letters, a history research paper, or documentation of work experience in the field of history.

To be eligible for full admission to the master of arts program in history applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale.
