Chapin Scholarship Program
The Department of History is pleased to offer Chapin Scholarships to assist qualified students conducting archival and other primary source research. The scholarships are designed to help meritorious graduate students with expenses such as travel, lodging, copying, archive and library fees, purchasing research materials, and other costs directly related to significant research based on primary source materials. In exceptional cases with faculty support, undergraduate awardees will also be considered. Topic of historical research is open. Applications are due in mid February and scholarships will be awarded in the spring. As a condition of acceptance, recipients of the scholarships will present findings from their research at a departmental awards reception the following spring. The scholarships are made possible by a generous growing endowment from Nancy Lanphier and Charles Armstrong Chapin.
Application process
The scholarships are open to application by any UIS graduate student who has received official approval for a proposed thesis or other primary-source based research project. Undergraduates with faculty support may also apply. Applications will be assessed on the demonstrated significance of the project, originality, and need. Application materials must be received in hard copy in the history department by Friday, March 9, 2007.
