Providing cost effective, accessible, professional health care to the campus community

Health Servicesoverview

Health care is provided to students whether they are full-time or part-time and whether or not they carry the student health insurance. Employees may be seen for minor, acute illnesses or injuries which might interfere with the working day. Worker's Compensation injuries may be seen for an initial evaluation for first aid purposes only.

Services include treatment for minor acute illnesses and injuries, yearly pap smears, birth control, allergy injections, foreign travel consultations and immunizations for foreign travel as well as required immunizations. Physical examinations are provided for all UIS athletes and for students who are required to have them for work, school, etc.

A wellness resource and self-help area is available in the CHS clinic and a supply of over-the-counter remedies is also available along with guidelines and directions for their use.

Students do not pay a health service fee, nor do fees paid for health insurance come to the health service. The CHS is supported by university funds and some user fees. There is no charge for visits to the CHS although there are some charges for special services. Students are notified at the time of the visit if any charges will be incurred. Because more complex health issues sometimes arise, students are expected to have their own health insurance to cover those types of expenses. Students are responsible for informing the CHS staff if their insurance requires the use of specific providers.

Policy for appointments missed without notice

Services offered by the CHS are a valuable resource to the campus and are free or low cost in most instances. When an appointment is not cancelled in a timely fashion, it may cause a serious inconvenience to others who need health care, who are ill or injured and need to be seen as soon as any appointment is available. The no-show fee encourages students to be timely in canceling their appointments and helps to finance the cost of health care provider time that was not utilized because an appointment was not cancelled in a timely fashion.

A "no-show" fee of $5.00 is charged (beginning Fall 09 this fee will be $10) to those who do not show up for appointments and for those who cancel appointments less than 24 hours before the appointment time.

University Of Illinois Nondiscrimination Statement:

The commitment of the University of Illinois to the most fundamental principles of academic freedom, equality of opportunity, and human dignity requires that decisions involving students and employees be based on individual merit and be free from invidious discrimination in all its forms.

The University of Illinois will not engage in discrimination or harassment against any person because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, unfavorable discharge from the military or status as a protected veteran and will comply with all federal and state nondiscrimination, equal opportunity and affirmative action laws, orders and regulations. This nondiscrimination policy applies to admissions, employment, access to and treatment in the University programs and activities.

University complaint and grievance procedures provide employees and students with the means for the resolution of complaints that allege a violation of this Statement.

Student/Staff Eligibility

The Campus Health Service provides treatment to all students, both full and part-time students whether or not they have student insurance. Employees may be seen though students receive priority during busy times.

Employees can make appointments for minor acute illnesses and injuries that interfere with the working day if appointments are available. Prior to making appointment, employees should make certain that their health insurance will cover any cost related to the visit such as prescriptions or tests that might be ordered.

Students pay a mandatory fee for the use of the Campus Health Service and minimal user fees are charged for some services. Employees may be charged user fees on a sliding scale in comparison to student rates. Patients are informed about these fees before the service is rendered. Nurse or physician visits and many other services are provided without charge.

Important

  • Who is eligible to use the Campus Health Service?

The CHS provides treatment to all students, full- or part-time, whether or not they have student insurance. Employees may be treated for minor illnesses and injuries that interfere with their ability to continue the working day when appointments are available. Employees should see their primary care for all other issues.

  • Is there a cost to use the Campus Health Service?

Students do not pay an office visit fee; employees pay a small fee for office visits other than those for blood pressure checks. Some small user fees are charged for certain services.

There is a missed appointment or late cancellation fee of $5.00 charged for appointments that are not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance.
