The Campus Health Service (CHS) supports the mission of the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) by providing cost effective, comprehensive, accessible, professional health care to the campus community.
It is an integral part of that mission to provide preventive services and resources that support participation in health care, enabling individuals to recognize health as a comprehensive state over which they have control.
It is our goal to provide health care that allows individuals to perform optimally, both physically and mentally, in order to achieve their academic and intellectual potential and to minimize interruptions in their academic careers. We do so by providing health care and health education in a safe, confidential (see Privacy Notice) and non-judgmental environment that respects and affirms individual differences and cultural diversity. We serve as advocates on behalf of the campus community in matters of health and health policy consistent with professional ethics and responsibilities. (see patient's rights).
Immunization records must be submitted and in compliance by the 10th day of classes for the semester in order to avoid a non-refundable $25 late processing fee.
The Campus Health Service does not provide medical excuses for missed classes, exams, or assignments. The decision for our policy is based on our limited resources, which are better dedicated to providing health care; the inability for us to make valid determinations about illnesses or injuries students may have effectively managed through self care; and our commitment to student privacy.
This policy is similar to other major universities and is consistent with the recommendations of the American College Health Association. An informational letter explaining the Campus Health Service policy is available from our office. Some students find it useful in communicating the policy to faculty who are requesting medical excuses.
In the event that you need to miss class due to an illness, injury or an emergency, the Campus Health Service recommends that you contact your professor preferably before the class or exam takes place. You should speak with him/her in person, if possible, or via phone or email. If you are unable to reach your professor be sure to leave your contact information (telephone number and email) so that s/he can reach you. All decisions about the impact of your absence on your grade, as well as any arrangements for making up work, rest with your instructors.
