WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INTERNSHIP IN HDC
YOU MUST HAVE:
- Completed pre-practicum courses
- HDC 501 Fundamental Issues and Ethics in Counseling
- HDC 502 Listening Skills
- HDC 503 Techniques of Group Counseling and Psychotherapy
- HDC 504 Theories of Counseling I
- HDC 507 Theories of Counseling II
- HDC 508 Influencing Skills with a B- or better (School counseling students must also have completed HDC 531 Developmental School Counseling with a B- or better and students in Marriage and Family Therapy must have completed HDC 534 Introduction to Family Therapy)
- successfully completed practicum courses HDC 505 Multicultural Counseling, HDC 521 Developmental Counseling, HDC 524 Career/Lifestyle Counseling, and HDC 575 Appraisal
- an overall GPA of at least 3.0
- filled out and submitted an internship application form by February 15 for Fall semester and October 15 for Spring semester
THEN:
the Area Coordinator (community, marriage and family therapy, or school) will review your application to determine eligibility
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
- obtaining and completing a checklist
- scheduling an appointment with your Area Coordinator to negotiate an appropriate placement consistent with your career goals
- completing an internship agreement (Form I-6) with your on-site and faculty supervisors prior to starting on site
- maintaining ACA membership and liability insurance
- having the on-site supervisor complete and submit: (1) a resume; and (2) a site approval form (if these are not on file with HDC)
DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP YOU WILL:
- meet one hour weekly with your on-site supervisor for individual supervision sessions
- meet (periodically) with your faculty supervisor in individual session
- meet at least one and one-half hour weekly for group supervision with your faculty supervisor
- spend at least 600 hours on site (an average of 37.5 hours/week for 16 weeks; or an average of 18.75 hours/week for 32 weeks) 240 of which are in direct service
- direct service work must include a minimum of 25 hours of group facilitation or co-facilitation and no more than 120 hours
- submit minimum of 12 audio or video tapes of clinical sessions with clients
maintain an ongoing log of all clinical activities

DESCRIPTION
The internship experience enables the student to refine and further enhance the knowledge and skills applied during practicum. In addition, the internship provides an opportunity for the student to engage in all of the professional activities performed by a regularly employed staff member at the internship site. The internship experience will total a minimum of 600 hours which includes:
- a minimum of 240 hours of direct service work with clients on site, of which a minimum of 25 hours are spent facilitating or co-facilitating groups
- a minimum of 1 hour per week of individual supervision with the site supervisor;
periodic individual supervision sessions with the faculty supervisor
- a minimum of 1½ hours per week of group supervision via weekly internship class meetings. Internship students are expected to spend an average of 37.5 hours per week for 16 weeks at the internship site
- submission of a minimum of 12 audio or video tapes of clinical sessions with clients
- maintain an ongoing log of all clinical activities. Additional responsibilities of interns are outlined in the Internship Agreement (Form I-6).
ELIGIBILITY AND WAIVER POLICY
Eligibility for internship includes successful completion of practicum (Credit), a minimum grade of B- in each of the HDC core courses listed below, and a 3.0 GPA.
- HDC 505 Multicultural Counseling
- HDC 521 Developmental Counseling
- HDC 524 Career/Lifestyle Counseling
- HDC 575 Appraisal Techniques in Counseling
- The practicum instructor must give a positive recommendation before final approval for internship is given by the HDC Program Committee. Internship may not be waived.
Students must apply for internship by February 15 for the fall semester and October 15 for the spring semester. Students should complete internship within three terms.
GRADING AND EVALUATION
On site and faculty supervisors will provide a written appraisal of internship students' performance (Faculty Supervisor, Form I-1; On-site Supervisor, Form I-2) at the end of Internship. Assignment of the final grade of Credit/No Credit is the responsibility of the faculty supervisor. A grade of "R" (deferred grade) will be used until interns complete 600 hours on site with a minimum of 240 hours of direct service.
If interns do not demonstrate acceptable competency levels upon completion of the required 600 hours, they will receive a grade of No Credit. Any intern who receives a grade of No Credit must reapply for internship and present his/her case before a review panel appointed by the HDC Program Committee to make recommendations to that body. In unusual circumstances and at the instructor's recommendation, a student may receive another "R" and may continue at the site with the permission of the on-site supervisor. If the student's faculty supervisor is unable to continue to provide supervision, students may petition the program to arrange supervision with another HDC faculty member. In the event competency is not demonstrated by the end of the additional term, students will be given No Credit and must re-apply for Internship and present his/her case before a review panel representing the HDC Program Committee as described above.
