Student Life Aide

Salary:  $8.00

Job Description:

Student Life Aide plays a direct role in office management for Student Life.

  • The Student Life Aide will assist the office staff with the following duties: Answering the phone, taking accurate messages and distributing to proper personnel, distributing inter-office mail to appropriate personnel, photocopying, posting current and future activities around campus, filing and running errands.
  • Compile the weekly student life e-mail
  • Maintain office cleanliness and upkeep
  • All Student Life Assistants will be required to attend monthly staff meetings and ongoing professional development/training programs
  • Serve as a resource for students and student organizations regarding student life procedures and policies.
  • Assist in the planning, production and evaluation of various University-wide events, such as Welcome Week, Homecoming, and Family Weekend.

Qualifcations:

  • Strong academic, communications & interpersonal skills are critical.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Student Center Attendant

Salary: $8.00

10-20 hrs/wk

Job Description:

  • Prepare and sell food and beverage products
  • Maintain cleanliness and general maintenance of the center
  • Complete daily reports for every shift
  • Assist with other operational duties as assigned by Assistant Director of Student Life
  • Interact with students, staff, and faculty during Center operational hours and events.
  • Meet with selected personnel, student groups, and committees to plan and arrange for particular activities.
  • Assist with opening/closing Student Center.
  • Attend monthly meetings
  • Plan at least one event per semester
  • Participate in annual training and on-going professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Must have ability/desire to work with groups of students in diverse settings
  • Demonstrate initiative/dependability.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.

Student Life Graphic Designer

Salary:  $8.00 per hour  5-20 hrs/wk

Job Description:

Assist with the development of various promotional materials such as Welcome  Week publications, Homecoming posters, and Student Life brochures and fliers.

Work with Student Activities Committee (SAC) to design various promotional materials for upcoming events.

Communicate on a regular basis with Printing and Duplicating and submit duplicating requests.

Communicate on a weekly basis with the Journal business manager to ensure calendar of events is accurate and the insertion of ads is correct.

Attend monthly staff meeting and ongoing professional development/training programs.

Meet every other week with the Assistant Director of Student Life.

Qualifications:  Must have graphic design experience, and knowlege of Adobe photoshop Must be able to work independently.  Knowlege of Adobe Creative Suite and a completed graphic design class are preferred.

Student Life Program Assistant

Salary: $8.00/hr

Hours:  10-20/wk-Flexible-morning, afternoons, evenings and weekends as needed.

Job Description:

  • Assist with data collection and assessment of trend data in the field of student life/activities.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Student Life with the development and execution of Student Life programs and events
  • Research possible events for the Student Center and campus community.
  • Communicate with various booking agencies.
  • Assist will all pre-event needs such as publicity, technical needs, and scheduling.
  • Manage the on-site needs of events in the Student Center, including but not limited to: load in/load out needs, catering service, facility set up, security, and performer hospitality.
  • Meet weekly with the Assistant Director of Student Life.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Be able to work without supervision.
  • Be self-motivated and be able to work weekends.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of SPSS and experience in event planning.
  • Work at least one semester as a Student Center Attendant, Student Life Assistant or Student Organization Assistant.

Student Organization Assistant

Salary:  $8.00
Hours 5-20 hours /week

Job Description:

  • Assist in daily activities of the Student Organization Center including by not limited to answering phones, taking accurate messages, distributing mail, photocopying, posting flyers, filing, running errands and assisting in helping any student, faculty or staff that enters the Student Organization Center, etc.
  • Communicate with all student organization presidents and advisors via e-mail and phone concerning any new organizational information, ICCB meetings and funding deadlines, organization paperwork, etc.
  • Thoroughly check and file all student organization paperwork in appropriate student organization folders.
  • Handle all ICCB Funding Requests by photo copying for ICCB and filing the forms for future reference.
  • Serve as a resource for students and student organizations regarding student life procedures and policies.
  • Assist in the planning, production and evaluation of various University-wide events, such as Welcome Week, Homecoming, and Family Weekend.
  • All Student Organization Assistants will be required to attend monthly staff meetings and ongoing professional development/training programs

Qualifications:

  • Computer experience required (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel.)

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.

 

Shuttle Driver-Nights

Salary:$8.00/ hour

Hours: 8 hours per week

Job Description:

  • Shuttles students from teardrop of the PAC along a designated route around the city of Springfield.
  • May be asked to drive university van for various UIS events such as Board of Trustees meetings or the Illinois State Fair parade.

Qualifications:

  • MUST HAVE A VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE WITH A GOOD DRIVING RECORD.
  • Must be available beginning about 7:15 p.m. until 11 p.m. Monday through Friday nights while classes are in session.
  • Must be dependable, punctual and courteous.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current resident of university housing preferred.

Student Newspaper Jobs:

 

Advertising Representative

Salary: $8.00
10-15 hrs per week

Job Description: To develop and maintain a local advertising base for the UIS student newspaper. Help to write ads. Works with ad layout and keeps track of ad accounts.

Qualifications: Communication background, ability to meet people, persistence and organizational skills, good writing skills. Experience with sales, layout and design, and word processing desired. Previous sales experience and/or coursework in marketing and advertising preferred.

Arts/Entertainment Reporter

Salary: $8.00   10-15 hrs/wk

Job Description: Covers campus and local area arts and entertainment, including previews and reviews, profiles and other stories.  .

Qualifications: Knowledge of , and interest in the Arts a must.

Office Assistant

Salary: $8.00

10-15 hrs/wk

Job Description: Answer phones. Provide support for the staff of the student newspaper at UIS, The Journal, located in the Student Life Building. File, run errands, help create and distribute flyers/posters on campus and complete other projects as assigned. Directly assist editor-in-chief, business manager, advertising manager and adviser. Some distribution of newspaper on and off-campus may be involved from time to time.

Qualifications: Dependable. Good computer skills (Microsoft Word, Internet searching) and able to work independently and with little supervision. Ability to work with a variety of people and personalities, work well with the public and possess strong interpersonal skills. Valid driver’s license required.

Assistant Layout and Design Editor

Job Description:  Works closely with Journal editors on layout and design of news, features, sports, arts and entertainment, and opinion pages.  Assists the Journal business manager /graduate assistant with design of ads.

Qualifications:  Academic background and/or experience in computer layout and design programs. publication production and digital photography required.

Business Assistant

Salary: $8.00

Job Description:  Distributes the student newspaper on a weekly basis.  Assists the business manager in obtaining and maintaining advertising.

Qualifications:  Must have advertising experience as well as courses in business.  Must be familiar with Excel.  Must have good public relations skills.

Must be able to provide references from previous employment or internships.

Cartoonist/Illustrator

Salary: $8.00
5-10 hours per week

Job Description: Draw cartoons and do illustrations.

Qualifications: Art background helpful.

Copy and Online Editor

Salary: $8.00
15-20 hrs per week

Job Description: Assists with editing stories and columns and proofreading of work for print and online editions of the Journal.  Will work with other editors for the timely placement/updating of Journal online editions.  May cover stories or write reviews.

Qualifications:  Demonstrated strong writing skills and online publishing experience and./or coursework required.

Distribution Manager

Salary:  $8.00
15-25 hrs/wk

Job Description: Distribute newspaper on and off-campus; transport page proofs to printer and pick up papers.
Directly assist editor-in-chief, business manager, managing editor and layout staff.

Qualifications: Dependable and able to work independently with little supervision.  Available for distribution on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Editor- in-Chief

Salary: $8.75

20/25 hrs/wk

Job Description:

Works with a staff of about a dozen undergraduate and graduate students and the student publications adviser. Duties include assigning and editing stories, columns, photos and other items for online and print editions;  upholding the Journal by-laws and procedures, convening and running meetings of the Editorial board as well as the Journal staff meetings. Assist in writing the editorials, and represent the newspaper at  various campus and community events.

Qualifications:

Should have excellent writing and speaking skills, demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, academic training and/or work experience in journalism or a related field, and experience with such computer programs as Word, Indesign, and PhotoShop.

Feature Writer

Salary:  $8.00
5-10 hours per week

Job Description:  Do feature stories about campus and the Springfield area.

Qualifications:  Background in Communication
or English preferred.

General Assignment Reporters

Salary:  $8.00

10-12 hrs/wk

Job Description:  Covers one news, feature, or arts and entertainment story per week and writes one column per week.

Qualifications:  Demonstrated strong writing skills and knowledge of current events and culture required.  Background that includes work with publications and/or journalism coursework desired.

Higher Education Reporter

Salary: $8.00
10-15 hours per week

Job Description:  Cover Campus Senate, Board of
Trustees, and UIS Administration.

Qualifications:  Knowledge of public affairs; interest in working in Higher Education and excellent
writing skills needed.

Layout/Graphics Editor

Salary: $8.00
10-15 hours per week

Job Description: Works with editor in layout of stories, photos, and advertisements, and paste-up of pages.

Qualifications: Knowledge and experience with computer design programs needed, as well as background in communication-related field. Experience with visual and graphic arts preferred.

Managing Editor

Salary:  $8.75
15-25 hrs/wk

Job Description:  Assists the editor-in-chief with assigning and editing stories, columns, photos, and other items and in upholding the Journal by-laws and procedures.  When the editor-in-chief is unable to be in attendance, the assistant or managing editor runs staff and editorial board meetings and helps with editorials.

Qualifications:  Should have experience and /or successful completion of academic coursework in news gathering and writing, editing, journalism ethics and media law and demonstrated strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Photographer

Salary: $8.00
10/12  hours per week

Job Description: Take digital photos of various campus events and meet photo deadlines.

Qualifications: Demonstrated skills in digital photography. Successful completion of coursework in photography, layout and design desired.

Public Affairs Reporter

Salary: $8.00
10-15 hours per week

Job Description: Covers Student Government Association, Campus Senate, Board of Trustees.

Qualifications: Strong writing skills and experience with and/or knowledge of campus governing groups, state government, and politics required.

Reporter

Salary: $8.00
10-15 hours per week

Job Description: Cover a variety of features and news on UIS campus for the student newspaper including Student Senate meeting. Writes two stories per week.

Qualifications: Background in Communication/Journalism desired.

Sports Editor

Salary: $8.00
15-20 hours per week

Job Description: Oversee editing, layout, and design of sports page. Some writing involved. Background in sports writing and editing helpful. Knowledge of WordPerfect and Pagemaker desired.

Qualifications: Experience in sports reporting is helpful.

Sports Reporter

Salary: $8.00
10-12 hours per week

Job Description: Covers UIS athletic events as assigned by the Sports Editor.  May also write sports columns.

Qualifications: Demonstrated sports knowledge and interest required.  Experience working with publications and/ or academic coursework in news gathering and writing desired.

Student Government Reporter

Salary:  $8.00
5-15 hours per week

Job Description:  Covers student government meetings and related business.

Qualifications:  Interest in student government.  Background in English/
and /or communications preferred.

Student Life Reporter

Salary:  $8.00
10/12  hours per week

Job Description: Covers housing, student clubs and organizations, campus events and other stories as assigned.

Qualifications:  Newspaper experience and/or academic coursework in journalism  desired.  Must have demonstrated strong writing  and organizational skills,  including the ability to report and write accurately and meet deadlines.

Web Site Manager/Online Editor

Salary:  $8.00

Job Description:  

Help design, maintain Journal Web sites, including addition each week of stories, photos, ads and other materials.

Qualifications:

Academic and work experience with Web site development required, as well as background in visual arts, graphics, communication or related field.
