African American StudiesResearch Assistant

Salary: $10.00/hr 20 hrs/wk

Job Description: This is a three year project so preference will be given to students willing to commit to at least two years. Research assistants will support the research team in various capacities: researching and writing that provides socio-historical content to the interviews; cataloging, transcribing, coding The History Maker documents; assisting with implementation of classroom components, including functioning as test users; logging the progress of the research; updating search parameters; as appropriate, physical processing of manuscript materials, digitizing text, and digitizing images, under the supervision of an archivist; and other duties as assigned. Some travel may be required.

Qualifications: Must be a fulltime UIS student in good academic standing. Must have excellent research, writing, and verbal skills. Preference given to those with demonstrated academic background or interest in African American studies, especially African American history, film and video, oral history, and/or library and information sciences. Successful candidate will should have an ability to understand various spoken dialects of Standard American English and African American Vernacular English. Must be well organized with attention to detail and the ability to work within a team as well as without direct supervision, while maintaining excellent records and communication with other team members. Must be technologically capable, and able to use a variety of office and audio-visual software applications. Creativity, initiative, and problem solving skills are required.

Assistant I Dean’s Office

Salary: $8.00

Job Description: Direct walk-in guests to correct person. Answer phones when the Dean’s secretary is not available. Make daily pick-ups and deliveries to other campus offices. Log and distribute faxes received. Keep copier and fax machines supplied with paper. Filing as needed. Data entry into Databases and Excel spreadsheets. Shreds, makes copies, prepares mailings, and other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications: Must have excellent telephone skills and excellent command of the English language. Must be able to follow spoken and written directions. Familiarity with Microsoft Office software. Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with a variety of personalities. Previous office experience preferred.

Assistant – Computer Science

Salary: $8.00

Job Description: Assists with filing computer science students files. Answer office telephone. Make copies, transparencies, and slides as needed. Assist in data input in various databases. Run errands around campus. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Proficiency in written and spoken English. Must be able to communicate effectively with public both in person and over the telephone. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. Must be able to follow spoken and written directions. Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with a variety of personalities. Computer Science major preferred.

Experiential and Service Learning Office

Salary: $8.00

20/ 25 hrs per week

Job Description: Act as receptionist. Strong customer service skills required. Answers phone and takes accurate messages. Runs errands on campus. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Proficient in written and spoken English. Must be able to communicate effectively with public both in person and over the telephone. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Outlook. Must be able to follow spoken and written directions. Must have a positive attitude and be able to work independently with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Must have good keyboarding skills and basic knowledge of basic filing methods.

Center for Teaching and Learning Assistant

Salary: $8.00

Job Description: Student to help with receptionist duties to include scheduling appointments, facilitating make up tests, answering the phone, particularly during breaks, meetings, and after hours for Teaching Assistants. Assist with filing, cataloging tutoring text, taking and writing agendas and minutes for meetings, and other helpful clerical duties.

Qualifications: Must be able to work Monday-thru Thursday from 4p.m. to 7 p.m.

Forensics (Speech)Team – Assistant

Salary: $8.00

JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist the Director of the UIS Speech and Debate Team. Primary responsibility will be to develop and maintain the website, http://www.uis.edu/forensics. Additional responsibilities may be to create handouts, flyers and press releases; confirm travel arrangements, and assist in planning events. Hours are flexible.

Qualifications: Skills in PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, and with streaming content (audio and video) preferred.

Program Assistant – English/History

Salary: $8.00

20 hours per week

JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist with filing. Answer office telephone. Deliver paperwork to other offices on campus. Assist in data input in various databases. Prepare student inquiry and welcome letters. Make copies, transparencies, and slides as needed. Assist faculty with clerical tasks as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS: Proficiency in written and spoken English. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public in person and over the telephone. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Must be able to follow spoken and written directions. Program Assistant – Sociology/Anthropology/Music

Salary: $8.00

JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist the program secretary for sociology/anthropology, communications, and music with maintaining program files. Enter data into Access database and run reports as needed. Type form letters and send mailings, make copies, transparencies, and slides as needed. Run errands around campus. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Proficiency in written and spoken English. (International students must have been in the U.S. for at least one year to apply.) Must be able to communicate effectively with the public both in person and over the telephone. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word. Must be able to follow spoken and written directions. Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact well with a variety of personalities. Communication or Sociology/Anthropology major or interest in UIS music preferred.

Program Assistant – Psychology

Salary: $8.00

20 hrs per week

JOB DESCRIPTION: Assist with filing. Answer office telephone-directing calls to faculty, and taking messages for WPI’s. Make telephone calls regarding WPI’s as well as messages to the students. Deliver paperwork to other on-campus offices. Assist in data input in various databases such as Psychology Faculty Advisors, Notice addresses database, maintain the current student database which includes major, and minors, GPAs, addresses, telephone numbers,statistical data of assessment tests, etc. Mail letters to prospective students. Maintain course enrollment numbers. Inventory Psychology equipment. Make copies, transparencies, and slides as needed. Assist faculty with clerical tasks as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS: Proficiency in spoken and witten language. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public in person and over the telephone. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Must be able to follow written and spoken directions. Must demonstate good interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact well with a variety of personalities. Psychology major preferred.
