How to Post a Student Job On Campus

Posting the Job-New Position

If you have funding and wish to establish a new job, you need to send a job description and a Request  for Personal Services( RPS) form to the Student Employment office in Financial Aid.

RPS Form : (can be e-mailed to you)
The Request for Personal Services form includes the hourly rate of pay, how many hours the student will be working (no more than 20/week-international students and 25/week for permanent residents and U.S. residents), the start and ending dates, number of employees being hired,  and the account number(s). Financial Aid requires that the fiscal officer of the listed account sign the form. Please consult your department head as to whose signatures besides the fiscal officer they require. Please include an office address so applicants will know where to come to interview.

Rate of Pay:
The rate of pay should conform with the hourly rate of pay established for similar positions, so please consult with Student Employment when setting rates. The majority of student jobs pay in the $6.50-$7 starting range which is comparable to campuses in our area.

Posting the Job-Established Position

An RPS is needed. A job description should be included especially if the position has been changed. No end date is required. The job will continue until the student leaves or is terminated. Campus policy requires that a posting be up for 5 full days before anyone is hired. This allows everyone an equal opportunity to apply for positions. The RPS form is available via e-mail. Please contact Kathy Dehen at kdehe1@uis.edu

Hiring

All hiring is done by the departments. An applicant should look at the Currently Available Jobs page to determine what jobs are being filled.  They are shown in red. (To find a job description for a specific job, the applicant needs to click on the department heading. This will take them to a page of job descriptions; remember only the job(s) shown in red on the Currently Available Jobs page are actually being filled.) The listing will tell how to apply for the job. Some will require that a resume be taken to the department and selected applicants will be asked to interview. Others may not want a resume but will hire by interviewing. Anyone asked to an interview needs to come to the UIS Student Employment office (UHB 1030) to get a job application for that specific job. Once they are hired, they will need to bring the two required forms of identification to UHB 1030 to complete their I9 form.

Off Campus

As a courtesy to off-campus businesses and more importantly to assist our students, businesses are welcome to call or fax their jobs descriptions to us. Job descriptions need to include job duties, rate of pay, hours per week and what hours hire would be expected to work as well as contact person, phone number and address of the business. If an individual wishes to advertise, only first name and phone number are required. These jobs are listed in a loose leaf  notebook and are also found on the web page under the title "Off Campus."

Application for Student Employment

If you are hiring an applicant, section III of the Application for Student Employment should be filled out in its entirety. This includes notifying the student of job responsibilities and duties and office policy and having the student sign the form after you have done so.

For unsuccessful applicants, only LIne B needs to be checked with a reason given as to why the applicant was not hired. Reasons can include: schedule would not work, more qualified applicant hired, job skills do not match those needed for the job, communication skills are inadequate for the job, etc.
