The purpose of this document is to ensure that UIS is in compliance with the federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 29 CFR 1910.1200 and the Illinois Toxic Substances Disclosure to Employees Act (P.A. 38-240), commonly known as the Right To Know Law. Both standards give public sector workers in Illinois a right to know about the hazardous materials with which they work. One of the requirements under these Standards is that employers develop a written document that contains a description of its Hazard Communication Program. A copy of this document is available in Brookens Library in the UIS reference section on the 2nd floor. This document will also be made available to concerned parties upon written request to the UIS Environmental Safety Officer (6-6531). The Safety Officer will revise and redistribute this document as needed under the guidance of the university's Environmental Health and Safety Committee.

All inquiries concerning information on hazardous substances should be directed to the Safety Officer. He will answer such inquiries according to the provisions of federal, state, and local laws.

All emergencies dealing with hazardous materials must be reported to the Campus Police Department at 6-7777. The Police dispatcher will notify all necessary parties (city police, fire department, safety officer, etc.) based on the information given by the caller. No UIS employee/student are required respond directly to any emergency situation(s) dealing with hazardous substances or hazardous waste.
