Source Reduction

UIS Facility Services is responsible for the management of all solid waste generated on campus. All non-hazardous waste generated that is not recycled, is removed by a local hauler and landfilled at a site in Taylorville, located in Christian County. Since our recycling program began in 1989, we have been able to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by considerable amounts. For example, a waste generation study that was performed for four weeks during the spring 2000 semester, revealed UIS generated roughly 26 tons of solid waste while collecting 10 tons of recyclable materials. These figures show that UIS is diverting nearly 40 percent of its solid waste from the landfill. See the UIS Solid Waste Plan.

Source Reduction

UIS' commitment to reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill consists of activities such as recycling and source reduction. Source reduction prevents waste (paper) from being generated at the source before it ever enters the waste stream for landfilling and/or recycling. Some source reduction activities at UIS include:

•promoting double-sided printing and copying,
•providing reusable plates and utensils in the cafeteria,
•implementing printing fees in the computer labs,
•composting and/or reusing all landscape waste generated on campus,
•electronic mail,
•electronic ordering system,
•electronic change of status,
•electronic standard time reporting,
•P-Card purchasing, and
•electronic registration.

Items Banned from Campus Dumpsters

There are several refuse items that are legally prohibited from being placed in campus dumpsters, including ones in student housing. These items include:

•All liquid chemicals (oil, gasoline, solvents, paint, etc.)
•All Landscape-Type Waste (leaves, tree clippings, firewood, etc.)
Fluorescent light bulbs
Rechargeable batteries
Red Biohazard bags
Chemical/oil absorbents and oil filters
Electronic ballasts

Facility Services provides alternative disposal methods for all of the above types of waste, for all Student Housing Residents and for departments that generate these waste-types on campus. UIS does not accept these items from the general public, including staff, faculty, and off-campus students, however, the Illinois EPA sponsors household hazardous waste collection programs periodically.
