Back to Campus Recycling Back to Special Items Back to Solid Waste

FRIEDMAN'S IS CURRENTLY UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT AND DOES NOT RECYCLE PAINT

Nearly 50 percent of the waste collected during any Illinois EPA's one-day household hazardous waste collection is paint. To address this large volume item the IEPA has started the "Partners for Waste Paint Solutions" Program. This partnership offers consumers the opportunity to deliver unwanted paint to local participating paint retailers where it will be reformulated or remixed for reuse. Unusable paint is picked up by an Agency contractor for disposal at Agency expense. Currently, UIS takes all unwanted paint to:

Friedman's Wallpaper & Paint
3040 S. 6th Street
Springfield, IL
217/757-9080

Friedman's current charges include:

$1.50/can (quart, pint, or gallon)

$7.00/can (5 gallon)

Recycling leftover latex paint is a simple process: It is first inspected for impurities, filtered to remove undesirable particles, blended in bulk to achieve the desired color and poured into five-gallon cans. The final product is either sold to consumers or to painting contractors or donated to non-profit groups.

Friedman's Ron Herbstrith said his store blended about 2,000 gallons of castoff paint during the last five months of 1995. With no advertising, he sold more than 500 gallons at prices significantly below those for new paint.

Friedman's will accept latex and oil-based paints, however, all lead-based paint is considered hazardous and will be rejected.
